There is usually a non-compete clause in offer letters but how often and how is it enforced? Does your current company prevent you from joining your competitor by warning you when you resign and/or proceed to legal actions afterwards (or whenever they find out), or does the competitor ignore your application when you apply? Ex. Zillow to Redfin, Indeed to LinkedIn, Uber to Lyft, etc. The poll is for people who have signed non-competes for one company and ended up joining a competitor later on. #tech #softwareengineer #noncompete #legal
They are null and void in California, but I signed them in other states.
Very interesting
Did not know they were void in CA. That's very interesting. I wonder how companies deal with people who know too much.
I left amazon recently and told them where I was going, nothing. I’m just an L6 and I’ve honestly never seen one enforced on L6 and below. L7 it depends, its usually only VP types.
I'm surprised the competitor wasn't worried either. Makes me wonder why they even bother with them.
They don’t care unless you’re a VP level or above, or work on highly sensitive proprietary technology in an emerging space. Example: algorithms for self-driving cars 5 years ago
If you don’t tell them where you’re going, it would be very hard for them to find out. Also, some companies will take action on people with minimal responsibility and some companies won’t waste the money/resources. You know your company the best…are they known for being jerks? If so, move on, and don’t tell anyone where you’re going.
Companies prioritize themselves over their employees so even if they seem nice, you never know is my mentality.
