How persuasive do you need to be as a Facebook Data Scientist (analytics)

Do all the DS roles (analytics) at FB require consulting mindset? It looks like these roles are light on tech-skills and more heavy on communication/persuasion. How open are the PMs to recommendations from DS at FB? Is the FB DS (analytics) only for the outgoing consultant types or can more technical resources also thrive in such roles? #facebookdatascientist

Depends on the team you’re on. Some more tech/stats heavy and others more quasi-PM (I know ppl in this role with stats masters and phd, and others with only bachelors). Either role type requires strong communication/influence skills though.

Thanks for replying. Are both role types benchmarked mainly on whether their recommendations are implemented in the product?

Generally yes, though when you write your performance self-review, it’s up to you how you sell your big projects. Not all of them have to be “I did this analysis which resulted in team building feature X which led to growth in metric Y”

DS in general, at any org, need to have strong communication and persuasion skills to align cross-functional stakeholders and convince non-technical managers about your ideas, results, value add etc. FYI - https://hbr.org/2019/01/data-science-and-the-art-of-persuasion
