I'm currently a mobile developer, I'm looking to transition into backend and recently landed a full stack position. In this position, for the backend part I mostly work with Java Spring and mongoDB. How relevant is my spring and mongoDB experience if I aim to get into FAANG? Should I pick up something else? (I'm already decent at leetcode) #engineering #software #swe #career #faang #google
sometime pretty much all that you do
what do you mean?
The tech you use doesn’t matter. Just be good at leetcode, system design, and be able to describe how you had impact at your company. And those are standard tools, especially Java spring. It’s very applicable to broader industry, including FAANG, even if they don’t use it directly.
Thanks! Do you think I need to learn Docker, kubernetes?
Na, doesn’t matter. Especially if you’re fullstack, devops or pure backend service owners usually deal with deploys. But again, specific tech doesn’t matter at all to FAANG. Probably best that you know what a container and container orchestrator do, but if you’re going for junior/mid roles it probably doesn’t even matter for getting in.
FAANG generally doesn’t care about specific technologies since what they use can be proprietary and they expect you can pick it up on the job. Those are two well known technologies so you should have no problems. How is Grab btw? I am slightly interested in them after visiting south east Asia.

Learn how to learn quickly and gradually (top-down, expand as needed). Never stay at a project more than 5 years. When moving, prioritize progression over salary bump. If you do all that you don’t need to worry about learning a particular framework.
