Currently in PM role at GM Canada (Engineering) YOE: 10 TC: 100k C$ I see people making $400-$500 in US. Looking for advise for career growth and reaching similar TC levels.
Move to the bay area, make that 400k and then your take home after housing expenses is less than your 100k canadian. Still sound appealing?
Well yea but that assumes family & buys home. If he’s solo then he could definitely save more
Did the math on SF vs TO. Expenses are <2X but TC ~4X
Move to the US. Seriously. I was working 48k CAD in Canada 3 years ago. Tried to look for new job for 8 months, went through 7-8 interviews and got nothing. Tried my luck in the US and got a job for 80K USD in a month. Half a year later got another for 140K USD TC. I'm now at 200K USD TC. My only regret is not having moved sooner, I'd have bought a house for much cheaper. The sense I get even for FANG in Canada is that roles are limited and so your options of switching teams is also limited. That means promotions are stagnant and if you don't like your project or team, you are basically stuck with it. So not only is the money bad but your potential for doing something you enjoy is much more limited.
Appreciate the detailed response. As a follow up, how hard was it to get in Microsoft?
You can't base it off of my experience because my path was actually a little unexpected. I was an app developer and was hired by a contracting company in the US to build an app for a client. After I got here, the client went dark. Decided to pick up something else in the meantime and went with Microsoft. Liked the work there and the team must've liked my work. Half a year later, position in the team opened up and I was asked to go through the interview process to get hired as full time. At that point it was more of a formality as the team already knew me well enough to know what I was like.

Answer is a part of your question.
It has to be more than just moving to US
