How to achieve long term well being working as a engineer

In the engineering industry for about 6 years, I feel software engineer is an exhausting job, both physically and mentally. Raising TC can make me happy for a while, but it'll be soon gone then endless hard work which can't be properly measured by workdays, also don't give me much a sense of achievement. I very much prefer to reading, cook, or doing nothing during the weekend. The only problem it's too short. Life is too short too. Really want to find a way out, can't just quit due to visa, what's your secret to keep long term well being? TC 400k.

Just live with 50k a year and save the rest. Then retire when you got 2 mil (likely even easier if you are not from the us)

This!

Tech industry has become such a shitshow. So many people dream to FIRE. And I’m with you Some dickhead will come and comment that you need at least 10m to comfortably retire for you and all your children. Including wife’s boyfriend. In bay area of course

I’m facing the same struggles. Having friends and relationships is so important

At LM? Isn't LM chill like a retirement place?

can you elaborate why relationship is important?

Qualcomm ninakkkan Dec 17, 2021

Chasing TC for me is kind of fools errand as there is no ceiling to it. So I try to unplug from work and visit family and friends often. I m on a 5 week vacation right now

^^^ there’s always more you can make, more you can learn, nicer car to buy, hotter partner out there, etc. you need to decide when to say when, or decide, fuck it, I’m gonna be rich and success and be the best at that.

vocation is good, i'm all for it, but it's short term, actually too short. after return all your attention will again suck into the blackhole without even knowing. meetings, bugs, planning, so much noise, time is so piece-ful. i used to have a place called home, now i lose it to the corporate as well sadly. i know i can be positive like everyone else, maybe even better, but this won't last, it will backfire.

Go to Google

Uber tk :-( OP Dec 17, 2021

it all depends on your team and manager, google can have worse wlb team for sure. it's sort of blind to believe all the team there are chill. definitely has a better chance to get a nice team than facebook though.

Physically exhausting?

Qualcomm ninakkkan Dec 17, 2021

Well some folks get back pain due to sitting for too long.

Invest aggressively and FIRE. If things don’t go as planned, well, you just have to continue working. That’s my plan. In the past I found that hating my job motivated me to invest more instead of just spending money on recreation

VMware 9ubt6fs3 Dec 17, 2021

How to invest? I lose money by investing in growth stocks.

Uber tk :-( OP Dec 17, 2021

my friend, this is outright gambling, yes you can FIRE if lucky and you learned a lot investment skills. to be clear my risk appetite is very high , i lost a lot money also earned some, but overall not be able to really FIRE. FIRE early is like a greedy algorithm to life, it's hard to get it right and quite easy to get it wrong. I prefer dynamic programming, think things through, reuse others' intelligence, execute after I get a optimal plan. this is ofc hard, but life will be hard anyway, why not stare it eye to eye?
