I’m almost at 3 YOE. I set up a meeting with my boss to discuss my yearly performance I haven’t missed a single deadline, and exceeded expectations, gave presentations and cleaned up a bunch of tech debt I currently make 80k and want to ask for 90k (Canadian) Our company is a consulting firm, I first want to bring up financials and if we can afford raises. Everything has been a black box so far, I’m not aware of our financials and any new projects / contracts We laid off a few people earlier this year With all this information, how can I go about asking for a raise confidently? I was originally offered 70k last year, and negotiated up to 80k. he almost had a heart attack when i threw that number out. anyway, any tips would appreciated Edit: got a $0 raise lol
Do blind75 or neetcode150 and you’ll at a minimum double your tc
You need an offer from the other company. Then you’ll have confidence.
Have another job in hand so that you can negotiate. If you are not in a position to do that, just ask for the raise, nothing wrong with asking for a raise. If they don't give it to you, take what you get and grind LC
If I have another offer in hand I’m taking it, this place is a sh*t hole, but that’s the ultimate goal
If you don’t have an offer, you have no options and maybe never will so go back to your desk without a raise.
Find another job. At 3 yoe you can get a mid level position elsewhere.
Yo, gimme the schizzle.
Labor is a marketplace. What you’re negotiating against is the cost to replace yourself. It has nothing to do with how successful the business is doing. Would it be a huge pain for your company to replace you? Would it take a long time for them to find a good replacement? Are you an especially high performer that contributes meaningfully to their bottom line? All of these make your “cost of replacement” higher and give you leverage. But, it’s only credible if you could reasonably quit and work elsewhere. If you’re chained to the company for one reason or another, they have leverage over you and can pay whatever they want.
