How does one go about changing domains? I'm working at Cisco and have relevant exp and knowledge about how protocols work and how network OS platform is built. Doing this for almost 7yrs now mostly using C as programming language. I want to switch to app dev side of things. I'm good at Java and python as well, able to design using OOO principles. But finding it hard to switch domains. Not getting calls to even showcase that I'm quite capable of doing other things as well. Does doing one or two side projects help in standing out? Does online coursework help? How do I highlight these "extra" things in my resume because my 7+ yrs exp will still be in networking and recruiters seem to see only those things. How did you guys go about "fixing" it? I'm ok with getting paid little less if that is what it takes. This is in India btw.
If you are in management role then it's much easier. Try in companies where they focus on coding and design rather than domain knowledge (except Amazon if you love yourself)
You must be targeting sde 2 roles right? Tbh given the sheer number of openings in large companies, it's only about clearing interviews mostly. Just get in your resume to hiring manager somehow through referralls. For startups, it will be tough
This was the case when I was in US. I was able to get calls from pretty much all companies that I wanted to try. Recently moved to India and finding that recruiters here take things rather too seriously when it comes to matching skill sets. They expect folks to know the tech that they are looking for to pass the screening.

*those recruiters...* Remove the mention of the technologies used from your project descriptions in the resume and list all of them along with Java and python in a standalone technologies section. Yeah, maybe do a side project or two and highlight them.
That is a bit tough as most of them know that Cisco is a C shop. Can't get too creative there. Yes, I'm working on a side project now. Hopefully I will be able to turn it into something useful. Thanks!
