Who here has experience dealing with/finding a mentor? I am trying to transition careers and am looking for someone to come to for advice, etc. I have tired doing cold outreach via LinkedIn but haven't had much success, and I am not close to anybody that works in finance. Just for context, I am would like to transition to a quantitative researcher/algo trader type position. I don't have a master's degree and all my code is self taught through Quantopian and DataCamp. Anyway, any advice is appreciated. #finance #quant #trading #career
Reach out to any alumni you may have in what you are looking to do
Thanks. I will look through my alum network.
I agree finding a mentor, especially one that is in different career than yourself, gets quite challenging once you leave school where there's constant networking opportunities and dedicated mentorship programs that pair you up with working professionals (I benefited from the program while in school). Now that I'm no longer in school, I tend to associate senior colleagues and managers as my career mentors, or sometimes I attend networking events - such as the ones being hosted by Ascend local chapter - to meet and engage with working professionals with diverse background. While I have yet to foster a relationship externally that I could call someone a "mentor" (and very likely due to the fact that I'm not desperate for a new job or career shift), these networking events seem like ideal place to find good mentors if I needed to.
That makes sense. I will look into networking events.
