I keep seeing a trend where Edge keeps coming up as one of the worst products Microsoft has made. Instead of piling on, here is what I think JoeB should do. 1. Fire all but the 10 best engineers (1 PM, 7 Devs, 2 UI/UX) on the team who understand customers, agile development, and how to build cross-platform. 2. Tell this team to build a new browser based entirely on Chromium (the default source comes with a barebones UI) 3. Change the default search to Bing, add some differentiated UI 4. Don’t make the team any bigger - otherwise you will start wasting time chasing stupid ideas 5. Profit If that sounds too difficult, this is basically what the team did for Edge on iOS and Android. Joe - if you are reading this, you are welcome.
IE11 end of life is 2025. I'd take edge in all it's shitiness if you could just bump that eol up a few years.
You are right. That is the MS tax we need to pay for justifying a browser, and I don’t think the SLT would approve us switching default to Google.
I have better idea on how to fix edge. 1) delete edge code
Firefox and chrome get constant update, like once every few weeks. So they can support new technology fast. While edge gets maybe two updates a year
The problem with Edge is that there is no reason for it's existence as far as users are concerned. (I very well understand the reason for MS.) Figure out a compelling reason for me to switch to a new browser. This reason needs to be strong enough to overcome the nuisances of using a new browser (some sites won't support it, bugs, etc.). Now communicate this reason and execute on it well. Then we can talk. Until then... you install Chrome.
Drop it off the edge
There might be 100 more steps between 4 and 5
Ship with window devices. Many people like my parents never download browsers. They assume it's all the same and use the default one.
We are not in 90’s anymore . My father is 72 and he understand what a “browser” is. Also are you saying edge is only for old ppl who will use it out of compulsion .
