4 yrs at Amazon. 3.4 GPA from a top 25 (according to US news) school, probably not the school these firms are looking for though. When I apply to Hedge funds, prop shops, etc my resume gets insta rejected. Only got an interview from IMC a few yrs ago. I’ve worked hard on my resume and I think it’s stellar personally. What’s the dealbreaker here? GPA? Amazon? If you didn’t come from an Ivy League or have a 3.7+ GPA, can you please share why you think you were able to get into such firms?
What position are you applying for? SWE (non low level programming) is probably saturated but you could stand out applying to Hardware, Infra, Quant perhaps
Careful on this advice. Starting at a smaller firm may sound like great advice but they’re going to lock you into a 12-24 month noncompete that will make really hard to move to a better firm Also FB doesn’t write much of any C++. It’s php
That's why I mentioned the word "issues" along with smaller firms. FB does write a lot of C++. Infra is all C++, lots of their internal tools and libraries like Folly, Thrift, HHVM, Thrift, Wangle etc are C++.
By far the best way to get an interview, at least at JS, with your stats, would be to get a referral. It will be basically impossible otherwise unless you're neglecting to mention significant factors or something big changes. I had a 3.4 GPA and got an interview/referral to JS, eventually getting an internship then job, but I was a stem major at a target college
JS doesn’t have referral bonuses right?
Correct, so it can be challenging to get a referral. Basically you need to find someone who works there that you have a connection with (went to your school) or know someone who knows someone who works there, etc. (We totally do interview a lot of people who aren't referred, but the bar is higher since we get so many applications and not so many referrals since there's no incentive. Someone will probably only refer you if they really think you should work here.)
IMO Medal for quant roles
When was the last time you applied to TS? We’re hiring quite a bit right now so I’m surprised that we would have passed given your profile. I’d apply directly again if you haven’t applied recently.
I applied to JS and 2S about a year ago. I didn’t get an interview from 2S, but got the job at JS. Still curious as to why I didn’t even hear back from 2S
Amazon definitely isn’t the issue. It might be the school/gpa that they’re hung up on tbh I have a 3.8 gpa from a top 5 cs program work for a competitor yet HRT, JS, and IMC all wouldn’t give me interviews last time I applied. The bar is wild
Wow. Coming from Citadel too.... maybe I should just stick to tech
May I ask your TC
