Background: In April 2021 I joined a startup as employee #5, working as a media buyer/digital marketing swiss knife. Things been going ok for us, also closed series A around $10m. In January, we employed an HR person, and she wants to have a quick intro chat with whole team. From what I’ve heard from watercooler talk, it’s mostly about if you’re happy here/where do you see yourself in the company. My results have been great, always exceeding the targets, but a lot of it has been attributed to my superior. Question: What should I say, so that she feels strongly about presenting me to the founders for promotion to management role (leading a team)? So far, it’s been only 2 of us in marketing (head of, and me), so there is no direct opening. Tl;dr How to present yourself as an option for leadership role to HR? YOE: 4 TC: 42k Location: EU
how much equity did you get as employee #5?
Nothing yet. It has been promised and employee pool is being established, but so far it’s only the founders and VC.
Woah, wth! Don’t let them screw you for equity if you were #5 and it wasn’t offered (or in writing). HR is there to support expansion and really protect the company, you oughta’ be weary about working extra hard at an early stage startup when the only real upside is from equity. The founders obvs won’t care about looking out for your interest as they’re tryna get rich, but make sure you get a piece of the action, or you should be looking for a company that’ll pay you a lot more for your time.
First off, I think you need a change of job with that TC! Unless you feel very strongly about your future prospects at that startup or equity.
It’s EU, so it’s a little different here 😆
Or I’m just lying to myself 😀
