How to prepare for E4/L4 at FB/G

YOE: ~1.5, previously at Apple and joined Amazon this year. TC: ~180k I was wondering what I could do to set myself up for an L4 offer at G in the next 1-3 years, with FB to leverage if possible. I'm not sure how possible this plan is, but my weeb ass really wants to live/work in Japan for 2-3 years before I'm 30, and so I wanted to get an L4 stock grant and then transfer internally after a year or two. The issue with my skillset right now is that I have no specialization, and my background in both low level/distributed systems and front end technologies is super weak (dicked my way through college, didn't learn shit from school or internships, coding ability hasn't gotten better since I was a sophomore in college). My team at Amazon also does not have any real senior engineers. The most senior person has like 4YOE all at Amazon. Our code quality feels somewhat mediocre and I feel like everything I write in terms of code is just a revised version of something I copied from someone else on the team. I don't feel like I'm picking up any skills because everything our team does feels a bit half assed to meet deadlines; there's no real time for me to properly learn or explore on the job when my manager is on my ass to deliver for 2 week sprints on top of the fact that I onboarded during COVID. This team also has no real identity and seems to switch products every few months. I was wondering what I could do on my own time to prepare myself for my goals. My current plan is: - LC (currently at around 350 but not enough hards and mediums) - Grokking and YT for popular system design - Relearn my college OS, networking, and database courses from scratch - Develop a web app for a project I've been wanting to do for a while Is this a reasonable plan? Any advice for how I should proceed, what I should pay attention to, or additional things I should work on?

For google and fb, if you’re going for general SWE, just leetcode. In your off time do system design. Leetcode on a pencil and paper

this is such a naive post. both on the japan internal transfer and E4 front

I prefer the term hopeful but i'm also aware it's very likely that it won't work out 🤷‍♀️ its simply one of my goals, and I'd be an idiot to not even try also if you aren't gonna help why comment lmao

You basically have 4 or 5 options for well paying eng jobs here in Tokyo. Google, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft or us and the number of engineers in each is relatively small. I think Amazon has about 120. Life is too short to wonder what if, trust me, make the move it's definitely worth it and you will become a more rounded person and learn a lot about yourself. Take a look at our site and we can relocate people

Indeed pays well in Japan too so it could be something to target if you are serious about moving there. Some data here on potential companies to target. https://opensalary.jp/

Yeah I know. I was hoping to get a stock grant and some refreshers here and then transferring, not applying directly
