Blinds- seeking genuine suggestions (anyone who wishes to troll, please excuse) Just venting out the frustration below :) I dont wish to stay in developer role for long. You need to go through multiple phases like developer, senior developer, lead, principal. You work your ass out for building something that was never yours, THE GLORIOUS PRODUCT!! Seems like development often puts u in the spot and just takes shit out of you. Sometimes its stressful too. Demos. Releases. Production. Automation and what not. How to hop on to better roles and become milking cow earning 300k base, 200k bonus and a million in equity? What career path to choose to become president of engineering or even vice president for that matter? Bring your best and honest suggestions please!!!
Masters degree can help you move into the management track and away from a dev. You’ll need great soft skills, product, vision and luck then to move up the management ladder.
Do you think mid tier MBA or mid tier CS degree is more helpful?
I got a MS in CS and have been fine. It’s been helpful to move up.
Plus it may take you several decades to get there... 300 k base huh my TC is around that and even tired of switching companies
Cannot understate the important of politics. You’ll never get there without playing the game. The book “Stealing the Corner Office” is a great primer on this. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1601633203/
In my humble opinion to make it to the top you need a mix of skills and luck, or other factors outside your control. For instance you need to be set up to success from the very beginning of your career, have the right pedigree, know the right people, etc. Or you win the startup lottery and be an early employee of the next Google. Unless the deck is stacked in your favour you won't make it to the top on hard work alone.
