I work on a big team so it's easy to literally work an hour or less a day and miss deadlines without anyone saying anything. This really bothers me and hurts my self-esteem because i'm flourishing in other areas of life minus integrity at my job. It's too easy to coast. Does anyone have any tips for me? I'm still early in my career so I should be learning as much as I can on the job. I do not want this bad habit to affect my future. I have a great team and boss. I want to do right. Thanks. yoe: 3.5 TC: 190k #microsoft #google #tech #meta #apple #help
Any openings on your team?
On a more serious note though, I would talk to your manager and ask them for a project that you could work on. Express your interest and you will be noticed
Add time blocks to your calendar. Ex - spend time on design tasks at the start of the day. Coding block in the afternoon. 30 mins end of every day to review PRs. Or you could switch to a fast paced high visibility team where you will no choice other than to consistently deliver results. Do not recommend the latter but it could help your learning in the long run
I've tried this method. I do set a timer though which helps. Thanks.
It’s kind of procrastinating which is kinda drug addiction, Try to work at least 6 hours per day at any cost and whatever you think of doing later about work just add in to do list for today and try to complete small small task. Also reward yourself with small PR or design or PR review or documentation whatever you do with something. Because it’s normal to loose self stem in big run but always try to do something every day. If you are bot able to focus then try meditating about how to improve concentration.
You are probably addicted to phone, social media, or something along those lines. Try limiting all of those and allow yourself to be bored Also, if you are missing deadlines, somebody will notice
I'm not a fan of the concept of "work ethic". There is no inherent virtue in being busy. You're early in your career. Enjoy this time and work on your goals outside of work. You can also work on some side projects in your personal time. Don't worry about "coasting". The corporate machinery will ensure to extract enough work from you over the course of your career. You'll be shocked to see how little directors and VPs actually "work". The corporate world is not like school where there's a clear link between effort and results.
I hear you but what about Integrity? When you're not doing your best in one area of life it starts to infect other areas. Outside of work i'm flourishing but internally my lack of discipline in the job affects me greatly and how I am perceived by others who work with me. I want to be reliable.
What integrity do the corporations have? Reserve your integrity for people, not corporations. You have to focus on your career first and don't worry about Microsoft. They'll be fine. They're sure as hell focused on themselves and will lay you off when they want . In fact, in my career I have seen a lot of coasters get promoted at various companies. Some did it just by politics, and some did it by picking the right projects and working on them well. The ones who suffered the most were the steady, plodding, keep your head down workers like yours truly
You should set time aside to leetcode and study design. This is the best for your career.

I've honestly considered this at one point. Just to learn the worth ethic if anything.
