I will be joining FB NYC as E5 from a non Fang company. I have 8 years of experience. What are the expectations from an E5 software engineer? How soon are they expected to ramp up? I have 2 months of gap before I join, is there something I can do to prep now. (Experienced java coder, no experience in c++ or python)
How was your FB interview experience? Especially given its for 8 YOE.. LC medium/hard and system design rounds? Also how did you prep?
Leetcode easy with behavior ,medium+hard in one , one medium in another, standard system design q
Had mock interviews before to prep for system design.
Did you get hire as swe or pe or infra?
Software engineer
Honestly I would read up some python and whatever tech they listed in the description. Even though I know u are not assigned to a team until u complete the bootcamp, still give some light reading and whatnot. And congrats
Useless to read up on any language, as different teams and different positions (infra, product, ios, android) use different languages. For example, my team doesn’t use any python whatsoever. An important part of being E5 is being a tech leader and mentor, so make sure you hit the ground running and try to find some part of the codebase you can become ‘the’ expert in.
Even though I have yet worked for facebook, but I disagree some of the statements. If you work as a Production Engineer, the chance you will use Python is pretty damn high. If I want to do some mobile development, I would read up facebook engineering blog to find what they facebook teams are using and up to. These readings will help a great way. If OP has some free time, I say go ahead. Just not going crazy. When I signed offer with Oscar I did not really get deep into the technology; just enough surface so when I hit the ground I would have some ideas what questions to ask and the direction I would take despite I was interviewed for specific team and have been doing similar work for quite some time prior. Being E5 and learning before starting job are not mutually exclusive. Ain’t everyone is Jeff Dean. As many FBers here once warned: wlb sucks and E5 PIP is high. A little ahead will probably help OP. Like I said, certain teams use tools known to the outside world already.
I agree with ElawnMask. They will give you enough ramp up time. Most important thing coming in as e5 is leadership and mentorship. You will also have time to ramp up in bootcamp or at least learn how to unblock yourself. The other important thing is to find a good team where you gel well with the manager and other team members. @fbn00b you’ll do fine. Congrats on the offer
I joined 3 months back as e5. My advice choose ur track upfront and do the learning before u join if u have free time. Wish somebody adviced me this instead of asking to learn in bootcamp
What kind of track did you go with?
What would you recommend to do the learning on .. ? For tracks , do you mean product vs infra
Forget wlb. Focus on impact. you will be very successful It's quite simple.
What's pota?
Mind sharing your TC offered as E5 ? And congrats and wish you luck.
Sure. 180 base 112k RSU (450) 15% bonus
Decent offer
Oh and congrats! Maybe I’ll see you there!
Will be joining fb in a couple of months as an E5. OP and others do y’all have any advice on things I should ramp up on before joining? So far my back ground has been heavy on distributed systems and Java. Thinking to start taking up C++ before joining...
How was your ramp up? Are you happy with your team? How’s the wlb compared to A?
I think there is boot camp to help. Did you ask about that?
Yes, I will be joining boot camp when I start
Then i wouldn't worry about it. No sense in starting to work before they pay you. FWIW i think they use python so if you don't know that it might help to start
