How to switch into a more ML/Engineering Role from DS

Pretty disappointed with these product analyst positions being called “data scientist” in the bay.

If you’re in a big company(FANG), interview internally and move to the right position. Do remember if you don’t have a PhD, it will be hard to get to the ML/research role. Engineering (Software Eng) might be relatively easy to get if you’re good at coding. You can apply in your current company after networking with the hiring managers or outside the company (but be ready to take a dip in seniority as you’ll be resetting your career).

Can’t you transition to a “core” DS role?

Try and move into Relevance engineering at LinkedIn if you want to stay internal. A handful of companies still have true DS roles in the sense that they aren’t just product analytics relabeled. I was annoyed by it too.

rewrite your resume to highlight any ML or coding you have done. start interviewing for those roles and take whatever gets offered. work the job for a year and learn as much as you can. then jump ship to a new company that will pay you market rate
