13 year old daughter is spending her afternoons on instagram (website, via Windows 10 computer) instead of doing homework. What we're ideally looking for is to set up a Windows 10 computer to: - Time-limit usage of Instagram.com website to a specific amount of time per day (so that we can work with the daughter to be more mindful and intentional about how she uses her social media time.) - Leave other websites unaffected, since she needs to be on Google Classroom to get her work done. We don't want to timebox that. Does anyone know a straight foward way to do this on a Windows 10 laptop? All the Windows parental controls seem to be around controlling by time or by app, not by website. The best solution I've found so far is "replace the PC with a Mac, only allow access to Instagram via Safari [and limit time using Screen Time control panel]. Then restrict access to Instagram in Chrome, and prevent installation of new software."
Try Freedom App
School chromebook
you might have an option on your router settings page to limit access to a website to a specified interval
Thanks! Unfortunately, it only allows the ability to give unlimited access during a specific time window. We don't want to control when she uses it — we just want to give a daily total limit.
There is a chrome extension called Limit which serves the exact purpose, you can try that
Try some Chrome/Firefox extensions where you can set time limits and time restrictions for individual websites. I have done that for myself to avoid watching YouTube and reading news during working hours.
Thank you! The part I'm not sure about is what would just keep her from uninstalling the extension.
Does adding/removing extension requires administrator perm in windows? If yes, your problem should get solved by creating a separate user account for your child and adding this extension using admin rights?
Some routers have options
You could try OpenDNS
Best solution is tell the kid you can monitor and you believe in them. Restrictions doesn't really help with anything. You will only strain your relationship.
But we don't want to block or time restrict the internet. We want her to have an hour or so a day, of her choosing, throughout the day, to use on Instagram.
