Build some real systems that solve real problems with ML and ship them to prod. Do that a couple times and you'll have more experience than many with ML Scientist or Applied Scientist as their role.
Have you considered applying for a product team which has some ml components?

Update: got a reachout from an ML team recruiter for Amazon Alexa. Is it worth it to switch over?
Start applying and see if you can get interviews with your current resume. If not, need more credentials and resume building. If so, see if you can pass interviews. If not, more studying and interview prep. If so, boom problem solved!
Hmm not sure if it'll be that simple. Is it better to transfer internally? Should I list my mobile dev / web experience? Only put up ML work?
