How will automated ride hailing change the Bay Area housing market?

Waymo plans to launch a commercial ride hailing service in Phoenix later this year. Surely it won't be more than 2-5 years before they bring it to the Bay. When you get a super cheap taxi and you can also work in the car, will there be less demand to live near work? Will we see more people buying farther away like say Santa Cruz, Central valley etc and hence a slowdown of appreciation in the Bay Area real estate? https://qz.com/1208897/alphabets-waymo-googl-is-readying-a-ride-hailing-service-in-arizona-that-could-directly-compete-with-uber/amp/

Not a chance. The US economy is on the verge of falling off the cliff so bay area housing will be dipping far before such cars.

What's the catalyst of this cliff you speak of? Rising interest rates?

While I don’t agree 100%, sometime in future it’d happen. I wish later than sooner. A country can’t live on ever-increasing debts FOREVER!

Uber/Lyft already provide cheap ride sharing... Ppl are always gonna want to minimize their commute time as long as working in a office is required. Now if someone would invent VR offices, that would cause bay area housing market to collapse.

Still have to sit in traffic. Sure, you might not have to be consciously focused, but commuting is still a time sink. People will always prefer to be closer, and autonomous vehicles won't change this until all vehicles are autonomous and traffic flows can be managed better.

more cars, worse traffic.
