Hi, I recently got an offer and going to join in few weeks. In my current company, my manager is pushing me for a promotion and actively working on promo doc etc. My manager has always been very helpful and I would not like to burn bridges. I have to resign in a week or so and manager is going to present my promo proposal to higher ups in the same timeframe. How bad would this generally look if I get promoted and just quit at the same time !!. Am I just overthinking too much!! The reason I have not yet resigned or cannot tell manager is because my H1B is filed and yet to be approved. I have also tried to postpone promotion stuff , but manager is pushing too hard to get promo in as I am being underpaid compared to other ICs in my team (our upper management looks at colleges where we are from to allocate stocks etc instead of present performance) and performed really well. Also work sucks(working on files which were written in 1990s and early 2000s) and even if they double my salary I won’t stay. Should I feel guilty in this scenario to not let manager know and stop from working on promotion ? What option do I have ?!! TC - 165k Yoe - 2.5 New Tc - 190k Moving from Non-OCI -> Microsoft
Tell your manager now.
H1B transfer hasn’t been approved yet !
yeah don’t do that
Take the new job! Won’t matter. Thank him for pursuing. Tell him nothing against him and say good things about him.
he won’t care. you’re overthinking
This ^ Even if he is , he just needs to get use to it.
You should do what is best for you. In this case it sounds like it is to take the new job. Be polite with your current manager and thank them for their support for your career growth. They will most likely try to get you to stay but it sounds annoying so don't fall for it.
Give him your first paycheck once you join Microsoft. We did the same to our parents as well.
Lol
Is the pay increase really that less...you will be making more after your promotion. Whereas any significant increase in the new job will be at least 1.5 years later.
Work is just outdated , so even with pay increase I won’t stay (also oracle gives lot of dry promos)
Got it. All the best. Microsoft definitely better than Oracle - Congratulations.
you said resign in a week? nothing is going to change in a week anyway. also promotion because your comp is low is a lame reason. with promotion you will be expected to perform at that level
I have been performing at next level for nearly 2 years now (managers words).
are you IC1? seems you were born leader, take your managers job🤷🏽♂️
You are overthinking. One resigns only when the right opportunity presents itself. There is nothing bad about it as you don't have control over circumstances. Your promotion is just a coincidence happening during the same time frame as you are getting a new offer. Resignation is the most common event in tech world and no one takes it personally. Big companies are like oceans and you are just a small wave. Go ahead and resign whenever it is convinent to you.
Makes sense , thank you for the input !
If you like the new role, take it. Tell him at the 2 week mark. I left just after an exceeds expectation review bonus and promotion once. I felt incredibly guilty but the director was very wise and encouraged me to do what was right for me and my family. He said he promoted me and gave the bonus for past work. It was hard but I left. No regrets.
Thank you for the input!
