How big will the effect be? I’d imagine if Comcast made users pay $20 a month to access Facebook, a lot of users would stop using Facebook.
They would use the subscribers over which they have monopoly as hostages and go to the internet companies to ask for money. If Google, FB, and Netflix don't pay them per hostage, they'll kill the speed of that service for that hostage
I’m just amazed or super curious to know the leveling of lobbying that cable operators must have done to get this finalized. I was reading an article where cable companies are notorious for hiring spouses, children and other relatives of political candidates
I see Google Fiber spreading more widely now so Google can avoid paying the fee and just tells people to swap to it's service that doesn't show others down - assuming they won't
Google fiber has been on life support for a while now
Google cancelled Fiber, except for leaving it in places they had already installed.
I'm not thinking about the 800lb gorillas. They'll pay or make deals. I'm more concerned about the startups for whom costs increase, if they have to pay the carriers. This is bad not just for consumers in general, but the employees as well. And employees of not just startups, but the market in general and hence employees if big companies too, I think.
I would assume if they start pulling that stuff, there will be a huge opportunity for Azure/Google Cloud/AWS to simply state: put your startup on our cloud, we will prioritize traffic. Are ISPs going to start throttling major public cloud providers data centers? Nope!
If that happens, Facebook will start paying for being on facebook.
There was no net neutrality before 2015. What bad things were happening before that time that were resolved by net neutrality? Please cite specific examples if you can.
Verizon was extorting Netflix refusing to deliver it at the speed customers paid for claiming Netflix should pay in addition to what the subscribers paid. That was an experiment and if it had gone better, they would have gone to more companies and follow the same tactic
And? There’s nothing else. Because removing Title II protections is a big nothingburger. We can still have net neutrality without the FCC in the middle of everything.
Vpns FTW
🤔 I don't really understand why this is as big of a deal as it is. In MOST places there are options for service providers. Switch if you don't like what you're paying or the quality of the service you receive. Strong arming a service provider into how they should manage their own network is ridiculous. If Cox or Comcast get crazy rich and your service improves, why do you care? Obviously the anti competitive verbage is a problem, but the FCC has oversight and providers would be lynched if they get caught. I don't see these same people crying about Google prioritizing search results on YouTube and search.
I don’t think Google does this, and you know why? Because they’re afraid of antitrust action.
1. The choice between Comcast and AT&T, If you even have that choice, is not much of a choice. 2. Cox and Comcast are already crazy rich and I shouldn’t have to pay even more money for slightly less shitty service. 3. Even if Google were actually ranking search results according to some insidious internal agenda, that’s not comparable to NN. The other results are still accessible without paying Google.
They would stop using Comcast
In many areas that's the same as saying they'll stop using the internet. Cable companies have a monopoly in a lot of markets.
If they actually have any other choice, yeah
