I've been looking around outside of Microsoft. I work in compilers and that's a bit of a niche field. I came across Annapurna Labs. What's it like working there? Are there crazy hours? Do they have wlb? I heard Amazon is very team dependent and some teams are good and some teams hell. I know blind likes to hate on Amazon completely but I'd like to know what this org is like. Do you guys have on call?
Thanks for the really detailed answer! It sounds like a pretty good org within Amazon. I really appreciate it when managers are technical; that's how it is on all compiler teams at Microsoft. The project sounds really cool too. It's pretty rare to get to work on bringing up new hardware/target so that is definitely a significant draw. Time to start grinding more leet code then.
Annapurna is amazing and very unlike general Amazon culture. Wlb depends on whether there is a deadline to meet but in general, great. Most people working >40h seems to do it out of interest. Plenty of interesting work! Managers are splendid as well. They’re unlike random Indian managers who wants you to churn out 80h/week.
That sounds pretty good. What's the average number of hours worked would you say? My main concern is switching and then drowning in work and not having time to spend with family
On weeks with less work, you can expect 25-30h; And on weeks with hard deadlines, you can expect close to 50h. On average, I’d say you’d work 40h/week. It’s a top heavy org (more L6s and L7s than L5s/L4s) so most folks have families to care for. People understand that there’s life outside of work and are aware of their boundaries. Again, I’ve seen folks working on weekends (and late nights) but conversations have generally lead to working out of interest and not pressure. Managers will not ask you to work overtime or outside of working hours. All teams are based in US or Canada so you won’t have meetings scheduled at off hours.
