Some example roles would be: Kernel Engineer (Research) @ OpenAI Runtime & Optimization @ Waymo ML Compiler Engineer @ Waymo GPU Firmware Engineer @ Nvidia Is the TC high for these type of roles? I’m slowly started to move in this type of direction but I’ve seen high workloads, bad wlb, and lower tc (in comparison to other SWE) for hardware and embedded engineers so I don’t know if this is the right direction for me. I value impact and TC, and would prefer to stay at one of these startups or at least in a field working on some new and interesting tech. TC: 375k (no longer at Nuro) #compiler #optimization #ml
Do you know how the TC is? I have kernel and compiler experience, but I’m considering moving to infra or blockchain development, since I know those have extremely high tc already, but I’m not passionate about the work.
Noone has time to train juniors today, I hope it changes
Fwiw i work in this space at meta. TC isn’t an issue, get paid as well as any meta engineer. Wlb is bad though and need to work across time zones more … but never found it that much worse than working in cloud/infra (which i hated - devops sucks).
Very interested in this, do you need a PhD for these roles at Meta? And what pillars get to do this work, all genai/FAIR?
The market is good. People with these skills can almost get interviewed. After passing the domain GPU, compiler, or optimization coding and system design, it almost implies getting a job. You don't need to worry about hc. It is a labor-intensive job. Always need people. However, the base salary is still similar to other ML/system engineers. But the impact is high, so typically high bonus, if the company earned well and you are a top one. The wlb is poor, 40-70+ hr per week.

Good at AMD and NVIDIA. But idk AMD is the preferred option. They made some new acquisitions.

I dont know much but these are roles where there will always be skill shortage and demand will be high.
