Hey all, I need an advice from the community if I should work on my SDE profile or switch to Product manager role (thinking about this role as they are not coding heavy and still connected to technical side) I got piped from Amazon since 8+ months (after working for 1.5 Years). I am an average SWE who joined Amazon after graduating. I don’t think I can code much(I can understand the LC’s and solve them in layman language but it is difficult for me to write it in Java or Python) , I can also do bug fixes and work on defined small tasks. For me it is still tough to get solution working for leetcode easy in more than 2 hour. My manager’s perspective before I left was I need to work on my coding basics & develop more skills. He also added amazon is fast pace and wont give time to learn but I would survive in lot of other companies where they can give some time to learn. I still want to stay technically connected to Computer Science field so should I still try harder and stay as an SDE or switch. ** If selecting other please comment which field and why Thank you all. #tech #swe #productmanagement #career #engineering #software

The ratio of PM:SWE was roughly 1:10. Post-ZIRP, execs are trying to make the ratio more like 1:15 or even smaller. AirBnB made PMs into PMMs. Many tech companies are reducing headcount in the PM and PgM domains. Then you have all the ex-FANG PMs in the market after getting laid off. Good luck. The time of Rileys Tik-Toking a Day in the Life of a Meta PM just vibing and grabbing lattes all day is over. Signed Former PM who went back to SWE.
Makes sense. Thanks for the information. Will keep you updated.
Try out sde somewhere else. Amazon is not the nicest place to learn and grow for most people and even if you were doing well you could get let go
I would argue that it's probably the best place to learn. Fast paced, AWS exposure, focus on writing and communication. The trash part is politics ofc...
Thanks boss. Will keep you all updated!
