Title pretty much sums up. Newish homeowner here. It’s a SFH so as expected there’s always some work around the house. As far as maintenance goes like paint jobs, lawn work..general maintenance I do it myself. But when something breaks like a plumbing job for a leak or appliance repair, I prefer to hire a handyman, sure that costs and puts a dent in the budget but I just don’t have energy and time to do it. Wife insists we watch YouTube videos and fix it ourselves. How do you guys handle conflicts like that if exists ? Tc -150
What's the conflict? Let wife try to fix it. If she does, great. If she doesn't hire.
Yeah I don’t see her digging 4 feet and in the lawn, take out the leaky pipes, buy new ones , join them , glue them and make sure it doesn’t happen again. I feel bad seeing her doing that and I end up doing it.
DIY then get a handy after. the other kind of handy
Let the wife DIY then? Why it has to be you to do the work
And call the handyman if she failed
Consider that your wife may like the idea of you being handy and providing for her even aside from the money. For some women, that kind of thing gets them going.
Is it something from a porn film?
Lol
“I’m here to fix the cable”
Try giving your wife other cosmetic diys. Bcoz plumbing, electrical, digging or construction stuff do require some expertise n YouTube videos show only the best case scenario and the videos don’t show the manual time consuming stuff. Vids mostly are less than an hr but when you get hands on will take hours, days weeks even months if there are exceptions
Opportunity cost, risk assessment and contingency plans. :) what’s the cost of either of you getting hurt by DIYing it ( or doing it wrong and then having it redone by the expert)
Depends. Leaky shower? Fixed that myself. Water pressure regulator replacement? Got an expert. Broken appliance? I usually call someone as I don’t know. I’m willing to replace myself though.
Yep pretty much the case. I have fixed stuff like that. Repaired my gas water heater. Replaced valves on Solar heater on the roof. The plumbing gets me.
Only hire for work that is repetitive and time consuming for amateurs. For example: drywall. You can hire someone for a modest sum and get far better results. They do it 8+ hours a day every day for years. You do it once every 5 years. Money well spent. Painting is 50/50. Painters can charge ridiculous amounts and might actually do a shitty job. Learn to do carpentry. Almost all handypeople will have shallow experience in many areas, sometimes not much more than an amateur. DIY that shit. Get a feel for plumbing and electrical. It’s not that hard, even the things that seem complicated.
Hire a new wife ☺️
I didn’t hire the current one so that’s a moot point

Plumbing.. hire someone. Water ruins everything. Electricity… only do it yourself if you REALLY REALLY REALLY know what you’re doing. Fire ruins everything too.
Yeah, electricity also kills you
Hire someone for electricity too, I’m saying.
