I have been in Amazon for around 3.5 years now. Worked in India for around 2 years 8 months and then moved to AWS, Seattle. SDE2. Comp 180k

Getting shitty comp as compared to other native Americans and other SDEs with masters degree.

I am having 5 years of total experience. I can't see enough good projects for me to grow to next level in next 1-2 years. Changing teams also can't guarantee level of career growth I want i.e. I wish to work on projects that give me good technical and leadership opportunities to grow to SDE3 in another year or so. Also, even though I am a strong SDE, this stack ranking thing gives me deep feel of job insecurities. Compounded by Blind posts on same, I feel I am done with Amazon. After 6 months, all my major stocks will get vested.

Even if I will become SDE3 in another year and half, the pay will remain shitty, comparing what other companies are offering.

I heard Google/fb pays nice packages to SDE3s. Heard of my frnds getting around 400-500k at SDE3 level.

I am on L1B visa, so can't switch companies right now. I am gonna apply for H1B in 2020 and wish I would get myself in lottery.

Till then what advise do you guys have for me? Should I start preparing for Google/fb right now, optimistically that I would definitely get H1B ? Or wait for H1B and then start preparing (time period between H1B approval and stamping) and till then focus on current team projects.

He thinks and some other Indians think that Indian Indians and American Indians are the same Indians, this is their land so they can abuse H1B to return home

Calling native Americans Indians is an example of how an early documentation error can still confuse people years (centuries) later, even though the underlying misconception is long since resolved and we now know that north america exists

Unbelievable, their request grow everyday. Now they require more than 180k for SDE2.

    You should definitely go back.

What makes you think you'll get hired as a Senior in Google/Fb as an SDE2 in Amazon?

At best, you'll be hired into the same level. At worst, you'll be downleveled.

I've known Principal engineers from Microsoft join G at L5(Senior) @Google.

Google downlevels because they can. The competition is much higher and they know that not a lot of people turn their offer down.

Shitty comp? When I first moved to USA, my comp was around 60k in California. Even that seemed enough. Expectations of software engineers is too much these days. Your comp is top 0.1 percentile in USA.

You have been at US for only 7 months; you can be a bit more grateful and not complain about lower TC. Wait to see if you get H1B next year and if not, you should look to join Google/FB overseas and transfer back again to US maybe.

Look if Amazon isn't giving you what you want based off your skills, then move on. Take what you have learned elsewhere.

I truly respect Americans and I don't have any jealousy with any race/color etc. It was just to give example that others are getting paid more who were hired in US. Most of those are Americans. I think I shouldn't have used this word 'American'

OP, look, good for you that you don’t let animosity towards you impact you. On the other hand just be a bit more self aware of the current situation in US: Indians in general are not viewed in favor currently due to scams in visa and lower quality professionals etc. That being said, the best you can do is to show that you personally is a good person and hard worker etc. Complaining about salary, specially early stages of career, is frowned upon. Any way, good luck.
      Oct 22, 2019
    • Wells Fargo B🤬!Huh?
Craig F. I feel like he is validated in his complaint. Compared to his co-workers and friend he is being underpaid for his skill.

As far as the whole "current situation in US: Indians in general are not viewed in favor" is basically racism. Let's call it what it really is. White Americans, mostly White American men, are now upset that they are being put on an even playing ground when it comes to career growth now.

Let's stop with the whole "Visa scams" because that is only a front for racist ideals. I am not even Indian, but the hatred I see towards Indians is looking real familiar.
      Oct 22, 2019
    • Apple craig f
I don’t subscribe to the idea that those statements you mentioned are racism. They are real concern raised by many, not only white Americans (I’m not one myself).

On a side note, If every controversial topic people raise gets called racism then we can’t openly discuss these real issues.

Well, I don't really get myself engaged into those racist/problematic discussions because I know those are bit more over-hyped for discussions sake, than those actually affect people. Given that, I feel Wells Fargo quoted it simply right about my problem. I am hard and smart working SDE, equally or even more competent that my peers and still paid lesser than those guys. I can't always compare my US income with my Indian Salary since I live here and expenses here are not same as in India. So, let's not divert the topic..Also, this is not specific to Indians, Americans, etc. This is a general human tendency to compare.

Why should you be paid the same when they are spending a considerable amount of money to sponsor you? You need to be realistic! You are still making multiple times over what the avg. American makes and tons more than in India. You have an entitlement issue. If you have the skills and the chops, apply to another company then!! You will not find another country on earth with the abundance of opportunity and the ability to be born poor and die rich. You should know from having a caste system that pigeon holes people. Here in America, black white, pink, purple, gay, straight, or whatever label you want to slap on, we should all be grateful. I am an immigrant and God bless America!! It’s not perfect, but I am much better off here than my native country!
