I have been in Amazon for around 3.5 years now. Worked in India for around 2 years 8 months and then moved to AWS, Seattle. SDE2. Comp 180k Getting shitty comp as compared to other native Americans and other SDEs with masters degree. I am having 5 years of total experience. I can't see enough good projects for me to grow to next level in next 1-2 years. Changing teams also can't guarantee level of career growth I want i.e. I wish to work on projects that give me good technical and leadership opportunities to grow to SDE3 in another year or so. Also, even though I am a strong SDE, this stack ranking thing gives me deep feel of job insecurities. Compounded by Blind posts on same, I feel I am done with Amazon. After 6 months, all my major stocks will get vested. Even if I will become SDE3 in another year and half, the pay will remain shitty, comparing what other companies are offering. I heard Google/fb pays nice packages to SDE3s. Heard of my frnds getting around 400-500k at SDE3 level. I am on L1B visa, so can't switch companies right now. I am gonna apply for H1B in 2020 and wish I would get myself in lottery. Till then what advise do you guys have for me? Should I start preparing for Google/fb right now, optimistically that I would definitely get H1B ? Or wait for H1B and then start preparing (time period between H1B approval and stamping) and till then focus on current team projects.
I can continue with Amazon till I get my H1B. I don't want to go back so soon
Unbelievable, their request grow everyday. Now they require more than 180k for SDE2. You should definitely go back.
There's no harm in wanting to make more money but OP is sounding ungrateful since Op has been in US only 7 months and Amazon spent considerable resource to transfer OP to Us.
Then what if they have spent resources on me? My efforts are still helping them earn billions..Again this is a pointless argument.
>worked in India >compared to other native Americans wat
I agree you should go back you ungrateful Indian!!! Amazon sponsored your L1 and all you want to do is switch!!! Why did you come thru Amazon then!?!?
You seem upset... Who pissed in your Wheaties this morning 😂🤣
Amazon didn’t do him any favor. I am sure it is being frugal (what a euphemism for being cheap).
Try jobs at other locations (Europe, sea) etc..their are plenty of opportunities. In fact try for an internal transfer.
You're paid less because you're on an L1. The company spent a lot of resources and money getting you that.
this is true and I completely agree. But the difference in pay when compared to other SDEs is upto $35k
That way more reasonable then you think... most non us hires which were relocated are like that
Find a white girl to marry. Or a US citizen Indian girl.
Only US citizen girl. White gal with non-US passport is no good for OP.
Is this becoming a trend in Seattle/Bay Area?
> "I have been with Amazon for 3.5 years of which 2 years 8 months in India.." You have been at US for only 7 months; you can be a bit more grateful and not complain about lower TC. Wait to see if you get H1B next year and if not, you should look to join Google/FB overseas and transfer back again to US maybe.
this is a good suggestion. Thanks dude.
What makes you think you'll get hired as a Senior in Google/Fb as an SDE2 in Amazon? At best, you'll be hired into the same level. At worst, you'll be downleveled.
Completely false statement. I have many examples of my friends (same exp as me) as Sr. SDE in Google
It's different to join Google as a new grad and become senior in 5 years vs joining google as a senior from some other company. The former is much easier. Sure, try your luck and be my guest though.
You should prepare to go back.
go back where?
Aren’t you from India? I’m saying because that’s the most likely outcome because of the H1B lottery and GC queue for you.
