As the title suggests, I am a senior software engineer and I have been since 2018 I have been learning as much as I can Started as a backend web developer in a startup As the startup needed a front end guy, I have stepped in to do both Then progressed as a fullstack for multiple year crossing multiple companies like hp, intel, eBay and finally Nike. Went from just frontend and backend to learning how to setup the whole pipeline system, then learning AWS to be the dependent on team member with DevOps Starting from java project setup to docker to Kubernetes and AWS account setup and network connection All the learning was hard and time consuming, With all of that, I have spent a lot of time at leetcode solving about 300 lc problems And practicing project design with online courses and on work as needed Not sure how to pass the senior engineer boundary and get to an architect position or a staff member Let me know if I am just not doing the right thing here Yoe: 7 TC: 180k
Start by reading through “Staff Engineer” by Will Larson. It’s a short read that is very dense with opinions and approaches. Then; perhaps; read it again. Then make sure you understand what staff/architect do, and don’t do, and start finding those around you that you can grab a coffee (or v-coffee with) and understand how they did it within your org. I see a lot of good folks move up to staff/arch, decide they didn’t understand what the role was within their org, not have a plan, and be fairly unhappy.
Thank you for the advice, Will go ahead with your advice, hoping to better understand the situation I am at
The best people for architect roles have seen a lot of architectures — good, bad, and otherwise — and so have formed lots of opinions on how things should be done in a variety of scenarios. So keep working, keep moving between jobs, keep paying attention. Become a consultant if you want to get there faster.
Thank you, I will keep the search Even though it feels endless
It’s a journey, not a destination.

im early on this journey and just broke into staff territory. (so take this as a data point and not gospel) senior to staff i found as a mindset shift from being the senior enginner. i recommend staffeng.com to get you started. i really enjoyed the podcasts and being able to put them on in the background while doing mundane things. but basically what ive found to help me break the barrier was bredth of knowledge. not specifics per say but experience with and knowledge of the practices and processes that should happen. besides knowledge. the big kicker is soft skills. aka communications and people networking. you need to be able to clearly articulate (written and verbal) goals and intentions along with pros and cons. also how to say no without making the receiving party feel like your dismissing them. Not really sure what changes from here to architect level but id assume its more of the same and just more yoe.
Know how to communicate as you will be doing a lot of that. Get your voice heard and have people start recognizing you.
