sorry if it is too long! I don’t have anybody to share my story with him/her :( I am so scared. I got laid off recently and without job I don’t khow how many more months I can survive! I will get severance package which can help me to survive 3-4 months from today. I am interviewing and got three FANGM on sites but I think I am not prepared enough to crack them and mentally I am so scared and tired. Tried smaller companies but it seems they are looking for someone with more YoE. With corona virus coming I don’t know if I can afford insurance and also the cost of living in bay area makes me more scared and anxious. I was paying my student loan and my TC wasn’t high so dont have that much saving. I am dual citizen, but don’t have any family here so there is no body who would support me. I did 100 questions so far on LC but I am bad at interviewing and cannot think properly specially on phone interviews. now all onsites turned to virtual which made it harder for me. What should I do? tc : 0 yoe :2
First thing to do RELAX. You are too young. These situations makes you stronger.
I hope you get through this tough time. Just believe in yourself despite of all the odds.
Damn...chilllI. You are in panic mode just like stock market. You can't control future but you can prepare for the worst
Forget FAANG. Go for stable companies. Government contracting and healthcare will be stable or growing in this environment. Plus great benefits.
Okay calm yo tities You need to focus as much energy as you have left into your upcoming interviews. I cracked 3 of the faang interviews not by being genius at coding but by brining my good personality, a big smile, enthusiasm, and speaking my mind and ideas out loud. Keep working and hopfully u crack one of the three interviews
But buttttt Are you not at Intel 🤷♂️
I just accpted the fang offer you genius
Post to hacker news and send me the link if you get close to being stuck on the streets. I can probably help.
Cut your spending to bare minimum. Keep your health insurance, sign up on your state’s healthcare marketplace if that is an option. Look into deferment options for your student loans. Stretch your runway as far as possible. You got this. It’s still a tight labor market, still a ton of companies that need good engineers. 3-6 months is enough time for you to find a new role.
I'm sorry you are going through this. Try and put the desperation and fear to the side, recruiters can see that and it won't help your performance at all. Realize that you have a number of transferrable skils (list them out before your interviews) and that you have a lot to offer.
Have you considered moving to the east coast? Washington DC / Austin have a decent tech scene. Also, no need to focus just on tech companies. Plenty of regular business that need smart engineers to execute. It's tough times - there will likely be a lot of layoffs all over the place so hang in there! These regular companies are also not looking for a leeetcode master and may have a more practical interview that aligns with your experience. Good luck!!!
Just one question: why did you mention Austin as east coast. You know where Texas is, right
...because its to the east of the bay area. Duh
