I don't trust HR with my i9 documentation, how to avoid giving them my passport?

They are requiring i9 reverification and I don't want them storing a copy of passport. Our HR has impersonated me in the past to take over one of my personal accounts using private info they had about me. I'm afraid to give them my passport in addition to everything they already have. Is there any way to do i9 verification without letting them store a copy of my passport? Can I prove it to the government and have the government tell my employer? (I will be quitting because of the impersonation and similar shit, but need to find a new job first, so at least four weeks out.)

Should have mentioned! I will be leaving in about four weeks, primarily because of shit like this. But idk if I can get away with not giving them documentation for that long.

Add a watermark on the soft copy.

They have to have a copy to satisfy H.S. No way around it.

Use one of the other means of verification acceptable for the I-9. Employers canโ€™t dictate what the employee uses. File a police report for the identity theft.

It's unclear if any other documents are better...it seems citizens need either a passport, or a social security card, or a birth certificate. None of these are ideal. Can I apply for a workers permit as a citizen and use that? It has less private information on it, but initial research seems to indicate I cannot.

No, it has to be listed as an acceptable document on the I9 form.

Unfortunately not. Genuinely looking for advice. I was hoping I could prove it to the government and they inform my employer. It's a broken system if you have to trust your employer with your most sensitive information.

You can use any acceptable documentation on page 3 of the I-9 form. Thereโ€™s a lot more to choose from than just a passport.
