1.7 YoE, College Grad, got promo last cycle (yes in 1.3 years because I actually worked). After that reorg happened and I have been a sitting duck for like 4months now. I want to work, but all I get is mediocre task like changing server configurations or adding small small changes into a already developed product. I do not want to switch teams either because my manager is kind of cool. #tech #google
I have an ex googler as a teammate. This person cannot be trusted to deliver anything on their own and has very little sense of urgency. So this kind of makes sense.
trust me, we do not join the company like this
Sounds like a dream job, you can focus on your own studies/projects
maybe... but I feel like hustling and gaining some actual engineering experience in my early 20s will make more sense for me :)
Could be a dream job in mid to late thirties when you have developed the skill set and maybe have a family, but not in your twenties
is it that you don’t have enough work to do or you don’t like the type of work your given and want a more challenging assignment? from the post this wasn’t clear, you could tell your manager which one it is and ask for more?
I think it's the latter. The work they are doing isn't challenging and isn't taking them that much time to accomplish because they know how to do it.
Yes, just like Disney explained... and our team literally doesn't have too many cool things to do, after the reorg there are 4 L5s in my team, and they mostly work on all the important stuff
Talking to blind instead of your manager….
"my manager is so cool. But also, I won't go to them with this problem"
We literally don't have coool projects in the team
Deep inside, you really don't want to work.
Deep inside I want to build Spanner from scratch
I know the feeling
Talk to seniors in you team and ask them if you can help them with their projects
I don’t know how things work in G but this has worked for me in the past I.e. show willingness and outperform on the task, you will be given better tasks
Have you taken the initiative to look for improvements that interest you and ask your boss if you can take those on?
I've asked my manger for more demanding work that will help me grow... he told me to 'hold on for sometime, I'll try to fish out some funding'
TC or GTFO
Start adding unit tests and write performance benchmarks related to projects your team is working on.

The end of Backdoor Roth?!
This has been like the past 2 years for me at amazon. Making 300k TC but they couldn’t find a project that matters for me after the one high impact project the hiring manager lured me onto the team with and I delivered in my first 6 months at the company. Kinda sucks TBH. But also kinda rocks in a different sense. I got to focus on my cat during her waning health up until she passed (rest in peace my baby 🪦🌈)
you focused on your cat? 💀
She needed to be taken to the vet literally every 2 weeks, daily subcutaneous fluid lines, and more. I can’t imagine having the bandwidth to do any of that if I was a typical Amazon grind mentality
