TC 94k, no stock 1.5 YOE (June 2020 grad) NYC but live in NJ Idk how much you know about BofA but I can reaffirm the general sentiment that it’s a slow bureaucratic org that’s slow to adopt new tech, they have way below avg comp, but decent benefits and WLB. My work is like a 3:1 ratio of non dev work to dev work. I spent about 3 months in 2021 serving on my team’s release lead rotation. In addition to being the monthly lead I also provided backup support for a while. It’s almost entirely paper pushing and harassing people to meet deadlines. It’s mind numbingly boring. My actual dev work comes in bursts. It’s drip fed to me. I’m given little things to do like small bug fixes, and then a bigger feature implementation that takes a little while. My work just isn’t exciting or challenging, and we don’t work with any new tech at all. They’re really slow to adopt. I also haven’t gotten any sort of promotion and apparently that’s standard for Bofa, you stay as a college hire for 2 years. But when you do get a raise or promotion, your next level comp is peanuts. When it comes to looking for a new job, idk if I’d selling myself short either… Never really knew how to “value” my abilities. The tech market has dummy rich money to throw around. Making 150k at <2YOE sounds insane but yet people get jobs with that! Am I inadequate and incapable of getting that 150k job? And the job market is highly competitive for those upper echelon of jobs. Imposter Syndrome is bad esp coming out of a tough CS program in college. It’s easy to really feel inadequate compared to others. The writing is definitely on the wall for me here, but I’m also extremely concerned that I’m falling behind… like REALLY falling behind on skills, because my work is just slow and boring and I don’t get to do any work using new or innovative tech. And because of the stagnation it really drained me of any motivation to do side projects. That’s entirely on me, but it is hard to get motivated when your job sucks the life out of you. I just don’t want to be labeled as having less potential than another starry eyed candidate because I’ve been crammed into the stone cold corporate mold that snuffs out any and all creativity… should I sprint for the exit now or wait? Patience is a virtue after all… I guess if there’s any point to this at all I really just want to know if what I’m experiencing is standard and it’s just part of the career progression grind, or is this really just a lousy job situation and I should seek my exit. Thanks. #tech #jobsearch #motivation #career #2yoe #jobhunt
Definitely leave asap. You’re just starting your career, any wins you get early on will help you down the road. A better company not only pays better, but you’ll also learn faster and work on more exciting products with more skilled engineers. Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t all roses. Most of us feel the corporate dread after a while no matter where you end up, but maybe you’ll be an exception…. All I know is that staying where you are is slow suicide.
Nowadays enough LC can get you in almost anywhere, especially at entry level
You still in BoFA OP? Just curious
OP are you still the bank
Are you more concerned with your 🥜 TC or the lack of challenging work at BofA? You could work at a company that pays you double what you earn now with about the same WLB (LinkedIn), or you could end up at a company that pays you more and also gives you a shit ton of work to do (Amazon). At the end of the day find what YOU want and don’t compare yourself to some rando New Grad Dev from Stanford who is on 250k. If you keep comparing yourself to these people you’ll feel the same no matter where you go. There are always bigger fish
It’s a bit of both. I obviously don’t have the career or work experience to command a 250k salary but 94 especially for NJ/NY is absurdly low after 2YOE. I’d like to make way more than I am now, but I also want it to come with actual work. The drip feeding makes me feel like I’m toiling away. WLB can be just as good as what I have now if I can actually get a job where I have legit work to do from 9-5
So start applying elsewhere and get to interviewing. It seems you already know what needs to be done
