I'm a contractor working building security operations at Facebook and I hate my job with a passion. I'm working a pointless job greeting and opening doors for people making at least 10x what I make and don't even acknowledge my existence. What can I do to learn whatever it takes to move from lobby security to working a real tech desk job?
Do u have a bachelor's
Community college two year degree
Find evening college, finish that 4 year college. Get into anything that gets you closer, do it. There’s no easy way, but it’s not too hard if you can plan next couple steps and actively trying to accomplish it.
Different routes, software dev in test (relatively easier to get in), UI if you like design, get a project management course/certification (still tech but won't require you to code)
Get a bachelor's degree (pick a major that pays).
👎🏾
@TheBuddha didn't pick a major that pays. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=I9f_BHVCxv8&t=14m30s&feature=youtu.be
I know someone who went from reception to sales director in one of the big companies in bay area so check with ur HR for growth OR connect with someone in ad sales.
Carly Fiorina?
Lol nope. One security guy at my previous company
OP, I do say good morning to everyone at the lobby. Yes, not everyone does it. We should all do it more often.
I do to but to be honest sometimes it’s annoying. When you walk in at least 5 people are saying hi and I know it sounds crappy but some mornings I just don’t feel like talking to anyone. 🤷♂️ I wouldn’t mind if we did away with the greeting all together, especially if it’s a crappy experience for security too.
Get into QA or project management. Doesn't require coding knowledge and you can make decent money. Find some certification/ training/ bootcamp to gain that knowledge. You could also look for mentor who could give you directions and knowledge to break into tech industry. Good luck!
I know a person who went from doing a clerical job helping administer operations(order lunch, send time sheet reminder emails etc) to being a thriving project manager. So the point is that you can do it if you have the will and focus.
Why do you choose to live here? I’d imagine it would be hell for anyone not making 150k+
Some people were born here
OP, I greet back to you everyday to my best ability. I know it's tiring for you. I don't have much advice to give but is there anything I, and the rest of us, can do to make your day better? I appreciate what you do and hope you take it easy

I don't mean a coding job. Think the ship has sailed for that. Sales or marketing seems more realistic
This ship has never saled for that if it's something you actually want to do.
