I have this idea with everything already researched and some proof of concept. It’s going to be a multi disciplinary project and our company has the best talents in these areas in different teams. I’m an IC and my skip manager is a VP. I am wondering whether I should take this idea directly to our VP or I should talk to my direct manager first. I’m of course hoping to lead the project if approved. (not at Adobe anymore) TC: $430k
I was going to say "Please don't give Adobe more power to hold the creative industries hostage", but I'm glad to see you're not there anymore haha So then, real advice. It might just be the former Amazonian in me saying this, but I strongly encourage you to document the idea in a place that has history tracking (eg. confluence, gdocs) before pitching it so that you have a record showing it is your idea. Otherwise, it's possible someone else will claim it as their own. Documentation also helps with working out the kinks in your idea. For example, think about what the elevator pitch will be, what the MVP will look like, and success/failure criteria for your idea. Once you have all of this thought out, you can make a much more solid pitch to a VP or someone else. As for who to pitch to, your VP is probably a good option - but don't leave your manager out; they may feel like you're deliberately going over their head. At least give them a heads up on the general pitch. If you want to buy time to work on the project, it will be easier with your manager's buy-in anyways.
Thank you for your response! I’ll make sure I have solid documentation. Another point is my direct is a new hire but I have presented work related stuff to our VP several times before.
Whether or not your direct is a new hire, it's best to establish good rapport with your direct. Just generally good to keep all doors open if possible.
make sure you write it down first, so there is a doc with your name on it, with the idea somewhat polished. or it will be stolen

Excuse my inadequacy, Added!
You'll never get rewarded for it. You'll see the idea get punted, and a few years later you'll see one of the folks you pitched this to present it as an original idea infront of others, and get promoted for it. It happened to me at Microsoft. Just keep this idea with you and if you feel it's truly revolutionary, just form your own company.
Just leetcode switch and get a raise? Why waste time with silly things like this.
1. Ideas are worthless 2. If you are enthusiastic about executing it then write a design doc with your name on it and share it with your manager and at least 3 colleagues to get their feedback and go from there
You mentioned you are not at Adobe anymore. If you were, I’d say put it on the shelf and forget about it. We are not an innovation company we are go to market company

I have made this mistake plenty of times. Talk to many people about it first, including your manager. They will give you insights that need to be polished before you talk to your VP.
Thanks!
