Yoe: 1.5 (almost 2) TC: 105k Current job is fine. Work life balance is amazing, the work is okay interesting and I am learning. But it does feel like maybe my career is not really growing. I started prepping for interviews 3 months ago. And am going through many loops in the next few weeks. So things I’m looking for in the next job: promotion, responsibility and ownership of projects, mentorship, TC jump, and a stock that will grow over the next four years. Well the main question is how much of a TC jump in terms of percentage is it worth for me to switch and get used to a brand new environment, sacrificing a bit of my amazing wlb, maybe even longer commute once we are back in the office. Would going to a start up make sense? Blend, Samsara, Qualia Compared to already established company? LinkedIn, Workday, Paypal #tech #fang #tc #careers #promotions
At least 30%
At least 30% but if you are sacrificing WLB then maybe 40% will make more sense.
Why do you think you will sacrifice wlb? What companies are you aiming? You can get higher TC and wlb
Current work life balance is too good that I feel like I’m not growing. Have loops for PayPal, workday and LinkedIn coming
And also it takes time to onboard, get to know the new team (especially during remote wfh times)
50% or higher
Depends on your location too I believe. Whats yours? I’m exactly in the same position as yours but my TC is a bit lower.
Bay Area
With 1.5 yoe I was able to go from 120k TC to 250k. Just try to line up ad many interviews as possible and get multiple offers. The interviews get easier as you go through more so try to line up the best companies at the end. You can definitely find positions and teams that you enjoy working with that pay great as well. Not exclusive.
Is Twitter the one paying 250k? Awesome glad you are doing well! I think definitely LinkedIn will be the one I want to crack
Yup. LinkedIn is great, good luck!
It's good that you're taking this step. I've got more than 3x your experience & yet get paid slightly lower. But love my colleagues & wlb. So what are you going to do?
Take the interviews and see how they go.
For that experience, if you do really well in the interviews PayPal will pay you 130-140K base 10% bonus and around 40K stocks + 10-20K joining bonus overall 160 - 180K
Seems like a decent package! How do refreshers work at PayPal?
The stocks vest over 3 years and every year refreshers are given. They may not match initial grant but overall it's made sure your pay is as per market standards
I was in the same spot until I got laid off. I really liked the startup I was working for, but covid hit and our funding was running low. My TC was 135k right out of college, I left with 1.5yoe and joined a big company current TC: 210k. To answer your question, leave, you can find equally exciting work for better pay. You can significantly make more at big tech.
At LinkedIn now?
If so can I dm for interview tips?

Database companies that pay well for Staff SWE
Anything about 40% makes sense
Given current TC 105k, so aiming for at least 150k and possibly with a promotion would be reasonable right?
Absolutely
