How the heck do people create a design portfolio and case studies with a family and a full time job. So tired by the time I get home and my wife works 10 hours to my 8 so I’m usually the one that does more of the evening chores surrounding dinner. She usually makes lunches for the next day while I do dishes and then we spend time together before going to bed and going to work in the morning. How??? I just need some motivation amd some encouragement from those who escaped their job that burned them out.
Plan ahead to make some time, sadly you need time to do it well and it will pay off. I personally hope portfolio’s die out as the ticket to a new job and we find a better way to verify experience and quality without stressing about designing an experience to sell yourself on top of your actual day job.
Feel this. Until then wish me luck 😂
I only slept for about 4-5hrs 3months straight to prep for interviews.
Make a plan for your case study and create one artifact for your portfolio every day. Write one paragraph for your portfolio piece section every day! This will take you 30 minutes. In 3 months you’ll be done! Same approach to interviews - practice for 30 minutes every day!
I spent 4 weekends solidly working on my portfolio. Then sent out resumes with link to portfolio. Then spent three days of my week vacation putting together my keynote with case studies. And then when I had interviews lined up I finalized the keynote. No easy way to do it. I gave myself 2 months to do the work. Then just did it.
A good opportunity arises when luck meets preparation. Look for inspiration among other designers. Write down a plan of action. Does your portfolio need a polish or a overhaul? Hire a fiver to give you some ideas. Create a list of your best work. Axe the rest. Don’t forget, your portfolio is part of your portfolio.
Burned out. Quit my job. Took 3 months to travel and do nothing. Leaned on my spouse for support. Then started looking month 4, and landed job month 5. Took a month or two to fix portfolio, presentations, and land jobs
Take a break from work like put in a leave for a week. Then work the hell out of that time make your portfolio. I would also put some time everyday to just plan for your portfolio so when you do get the time you execute at a greater speed. Good luck.
It’s time to make some adjustments. If you’re not happy, that means you have to act on it. You don’t talk about it no more, there’s no more talking about it. It’s time to act.
Thanks
