I don't understand why? They never fire me because I do acceptable work, changed three top tier companies in this time. Still an IC, even though I want to try management, they never give me a chance and I don't try hard enough. Promotion has never been my thing, my batch mates and friends who started with me are VP or Directors, Im still a senior engineer lol. What's going wrong guys? TC: 450k #tech
u are probably not politically savvy.
This - this is the biggest factor to promos. Talent doesn’t even factor if you had this
What does one need to do to be politically savvy? Asking for a friend
“Comparison is the thief of joy"
And yet you failed to answer his question.
You can code, they can’t. Stop doing what you are doing and move up the chain
You don’t do toxic politics
1) luck 2) you are probably not a corporate slave On 1 genius comes 100 corporate leeches who do not contribute a shit, but are sleezy enough people like them and get them promoted. This is especially true for higher promos. Taking 15y to become a senior is a bit worrisome, but at least we can be sure you do have experience for senior when hiring, I cannot tell the same for someone with senior title and 3yoe
You would hire a 15 yoe senior over e 3 yoe senior?
yes
You said it yourself, you aren't trying hard enough. No one is going to hand it to you. Either go and take it, or someone else will.
The percentage of engineers who ever became VP is minuscule. The vast majority of people end at senior. Some at staff but often that is their last job.
Agreed. I mean how many positions do we have as PE or DE etc. I think after staff engr (L6) it’s really hard to get promoted because up the ladder the number of positions are very limited.
I'm surprised to see it's even a possibility for engineers to get to directors or VPs at bigger companies. I doubt any director or VP at booking has ever seen a line of code lol. They just hire some already VP or director externally and their background is usually just business
Learn about the PIE principle: performance, influence, exposure. Performance is maybe 20%. The important factors are influence and exposure and you’re at best just average or you wouldn’t be stuck. Research how to gain influence and exposure in an organization.
to reach mgmt you have to be willing to stab a few people in the back
You are better than me, I got promoted only once in 16 yoe. The best promotion I got was switching job and up leveling myself. The reason is I don’t involve in politics, boot licking, and I’m just too open and honest. But do I have regrets ? Nope I don’t, it’s just work.
I got promoted 0 times in 15 years. I’ve never been promoted my entire career. I get promotions myself by jumping ships. Am staff Eng now.
"too open and honest" AKA "I have no filter"

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Do you have what they’ll never have? Enough? If so, why give shit?
