I resigned this week and accepted a new job. Now my previous job is really pushing me to do some consulting work to keep their project moving. I'm not sure what the new company's policy is on this. I was at IBM before and I signed an agreement to not work for any competitor, which is basically any tech-related company. I think they would want you to get approval to work at Albertson's on the weekend. The new company is a CA startup. I don't think CA businesses generally have non-competes, do they? I'm in the midwest. If I do any consulting I know I will want to increase my old rate of $78 on a hour. No idea what to target though. I don't want to jeopardize my new job but some extra income would be nice. Any thoughts on how I should handle this?
I charged 2.5x to my old company to have me come back
Make sure to get clarity from new employers legal counsel else risk legal trouble later
This is what I'm more worried about. Also not appearing to be 100% loyal to the new co.
Just talk to the new co HR. Tell them as much as you like the new company, you want to make sure your previous team moves forward successfully without you.
Ca is a non compete state And if you just hired a guy and he immediately asked on his first day can I moonlight? What good do you think will come out of it? The less people know the better
I get your point. I think it's not worth the little bit of extra cash. I want to be fully committed to growing this startup and hopefully an exit.
I hear ya These chances don’t come up often so sad to hear ya say no
Just say no. This is almost never worth the hassle, and as long as you have ties back to the old company you won't have your head fully in the game at the new one. Make a clean break and move onward and upward.
Thanks for the input. I think I am turning down the contract offer. I am leaving because I don't like the work anyway.
Target your consulting rate at 2x your old rate.
