I see plenty of highly talented people working in tech. What stops them from starting their own company?

Top reasons continuing as employees?

Fear of losing the comfortable benefits these big tech companies provide.

It's not that easy to make a successful company.

Not having a greencard

Would definitely create (legit) employment if I did based on some technical ideas I have. Unfortunately I am Indian.

Then why not move to EU/Asia/AU etc etc?

Amazon SmkWdEvyDy Sep 9, 2019

Skill in tech doesn't mean skill in running a business.

Livongo Bkcd29895 OP Sep 9, 2019

So why not partner with someone with better business/operations skills?

Amazon SmkWdEvyDy Sep 9, 2019

Because it's still a risk and a lot more work than just putting in your 40 hours and getting paid.

Own company is commitment which is 100 times more than work( which means no personal life/ family life/ kids) you have to breath and live for your company at least for few (4-more years) you need to know a lot than coding alone When as an employee you are just responsible for the “TASK “ assigned to you

Starting a business is pretty hard. You also need startup capital, a business model (that has at least a runway to profitability), and possibly employees too. There’s a lot that goes into it. Yet after all of that work, it may be years until you see a payday from it, and indeed there is disturbingly high chance it won’t survive at all.

Blind folks will always brag about how they left companies for slightly better compensation or benefits. These kind of profiles do not show an entrepreneurship spirit to me.

Amazon SmkWdEvyDy Sep 9, 2019

That takes a lot of energy and may still leave you broke. Why risk it when you can makes hundreds of thousands without the risk?

No good money is made without risk

Amazon chdyt728 Sep 9, 2019

Tech skills != business skills. Very different. And judging by how incapable some people at these companies seem to be at simply interacting with another human being, I doubt they would have any chance of being successful running a business.

"I want to ask my boss for a raise. I've been drafting this email for months. Do I start with 'Hi' or 'Hello'?"

Lol, ask him for beer

Maybe cause 95% of startups fail? And if you have something slightly successful 5 other companies pop up within 6 months copying your idea?
