- My manager and task lead are two separate people My task lead RARELY communicated with me during our time together (8 months) and generally wasn't pleasurable to work with. He would get angry if I stopped by his office for quick updates, and generally pushed our meetings off. At some point, I realized I didn't want to work for this person and my motivation dropped significantly. During this corona virus pandemic I fell behind a bit at work and generally produced lesser quality. My task lead called me to bring up my performance - and I just flat out told him that the team wasn't social, there was a lot of red tape, and the work wasn't mentally stimulating. Now he recommended I leave the team, and my manager knows. I basically have to find a new job in the current job market ASAP or else I'll get laid off. I just can't imagine having to be so FAKE in the corporate world. I just want to be honest with what interests me. I don't want to play the political game. Any advice?
Well this is how you learn. Never do this if you dont have a backup plan
The level of entitlement you have is insane. Do you seriously think that you don't deserve to be fired for doing a bad job? And on top of that, you think that your reward for doing a bad job should be to be given more interesting work that you'll enjoy more? Does that sound logical to you? Doing the work you're supposed to do is not being "fake" or "playing political games"; it's literally just being a professional. Professionals do their job to the best of their ability even if it's not always the thing they want to do the most. You need to grow up and realize that every job has parts that are not enjoyable. I assume you are young and early in your career based on your attitude so hopefully you take this as a wake up call.
You have to fake it so you don’t burn bridges. At least if you get laid off you can file for unemployment.
What's your experience at Northrup like? Do you enjoy your team?
Ive had good and bad managers. The secret is to try to stay under the radar, not stir the pot, pretend everything is good while looking for a new job. If looking within the company bad managers will try to sabotage you so you need to be on their good side even if they are complete morons. I currently enjoy my team no one is trying to upstage others and our manager is retiring soon so he is super laid back.
Have you shared this with your manager? Have a discussion with them. Remember every job has problems, you have to learn to work around or with them or fix them :)
I told my manager everything - I think I just need a change
Ok. Also if it’s something you can’t work with, leaving is good for your overall sanity. I was in toxic place for some tome and at one point I decided to simply pull the plug. I didn’t want to bring stress home.
Raytheon doesn't fire you unless you submit timecard fraud. You can only get laid off if they don't have enough contract work and you aren't selected.
Yes true! I'll probably switch internally for the time being
Simple: 1) You are a top performer or 2) You are an average performer if you == 1 { b_tchAllYouCan() } else { s_ckItUpOrLeave() }
Haha programming logic ftw
Just switch team and move on. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Thanks! This is very helpful :)
If they are extremely busy, as you say, how would you expect them to react when you drop by their office for quick updates? As a busy person, I also move low priority status update meetings to make room for higher priority meetings. You come across as someone that thinks others should arrange their schedule around you. You seem to be blaming everyone else for your performance problems. How did you expect them to react when you have performance problems and tell them that you don’t like the team or the work?
TC low as the ocean floor.... And job market is poor right now
This is the least helpful comment I've seen in decades. Hold your honesty to someone who can take it. Yes, look at internal transfer. If you can't get along with your boss' #1, you're on the wrong team.
