My manager left abruptly. Then *his* manager announces intent to also abruptly leave. It seems like managers were asked to do something they didn't want to do. I cannot be sure, but I am guessing they needed a URA target, but couldn't find one. And frankly: there is no one on my team who is bad. I know that might sound unlikely --but I really would not choose someone to fire. I *couldn't* choose someone. Everyone is highly productive on our team. I used to sing the praises of Amazon. 'It's not so bad', 'those are just naysayers', 'They just want to rest and vest', etc. And I am starting to think it's like that, and I was wrong the whole time. I really did enjoy my work. It's a much more productive place than I have ever worked in before. But all of those complaints about Amazon, all of the gripes and banana jokes and telling people never to join it... It turns out they may have been correct. Someone on Blind once wrote that working at Amazon is like russian roulette. Eventually the URA wheel spins and you're up. For some people it happens after 1 year. For others, it takes 10. But it always comes.
In Blind we trust.
I would randomly pick and not think twice about it. Just part of the job. That is not why they left.
Yea I really admire managers for doing it. *Both* are protesting quite vigorously. ... and I hate to say it, but I would do exactly what you're describing. The way I see it is that Amazon is firing them, not me.
well I mean you know them and I don’t do maybe you are right about them. sounds exceedingly rare though! you should maneuver to promo x2 and grab the skip’s vacant seat
Meeting ura quota is no big deal. In any company you can find someone worth piping only every once in a while. Most of the times its just random. No manager will quit over that.
If there was someone to URA, sure. But there really isn't. We are not a large team. I know you might be skeptical... But really there is no one I would want to fire.
I know someone personally who quit because his skip was asking him to performance manage his directs in a way that he felt was unethical. He did, in fact, quit over that.
If both your manager and skip left immediately, it’s unlikely about URA, at your skip level it’s probably one or two. There are many many things that managers cannot control or get forced to do. When one of those things is cross the line, people would give it up and leave.
What other things could they be forced to do that would warrant leaving? It certainly seems possible (I am just guessing the reason) but I don't know any.
Sounds like you had a good manager and skip. That's why you had a good time. They shielded you from the rest of the company. There are good teams in Amazon, probably 30%.
Yes, i agree. I am scared now 😬
It's ok, don't be scared. A good job can turn into a bad job at any time, but there are always other jobs. People are all doom on blind but even a friend of mine who just graduated a bootcamp has a few interviews lined up. Maybe you will have a forced break between jobs, just try to make sure you save money now to afford it. Another job will come along. Boethius : It's my belief that history is a wheel. "Inconstancy is my very essence," says the wheel. "Rise up on my spokes if you like, but don't complain when you're cast back down into the depths. Good times pass away, but then so do the bad. Mutability is our tragedy, but it's also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, are always passing away."
Did you ever thought about the ship is sinking. And they just decided to jump the ship.
@op, you look pretty junior to think that way. For sure, if you’re manager and his manager leave, it is NOT because of your weird thoughts about not willing to pip someone. The top manager like directors are evaluated on results. My bet is the group metric looks pretty bad. You think that everyone is competent and works hard. But who cares if you’re customers are unhappy, if the competition beats your product, or something completely wrong in the org. Maybe he did something against company value. Maybe it also could be the VP has a friend director that need a job. Whatever reason is because you’re director felt uncomfortable fir his own sake, not yours.
Always leave when two levels of management are leaving.
Bahhh… this is nonsense in big tech…
I have seen this several times. Nothing good ever came out of that.
It's "hire and develop the best". I don't see "fire and eliminate the worst" as one of the LPs.
And u woke up Sure your timings r worst
