The man I love hates me because I’m Vietnamese
With the number of internal tools and procedures, I really wish I was in a non-FAANG Company with a generic code base and pipelines. With the number of internal tools, it has meant that I cannot use any LLM models to boost my productivity. Anyone else feel the same?
At non faang we don't have internal llm and aren't allowed to use public llm. We also have bespoke code base.
At this point a lot of non-FAANG have ChatGPT enterprise
Yup, we do
You are paid to write code. Be thankful because in non tech companies, the few software jobs that we had have reduced further because of ChatGPT, tabnine, copilot and outsourcing
lol don’t worry you’re in bottom of the barrel FAANG. Only Amazon people refer to FAANG as their job.
I agree its cringe but it kinda makes sense in this context since he’s only referring to FAANG having so many internal tools
1. FAANG is FAANG 2. Plenty of people from other FAANG refer to their company as FAANG 3. Amazon pays middle of the band compared to other FAANG 4. Amazon WLB and job security is middle of the band compared to other FAANG 5. FAANG comprises of blue chip tech stocks that are large and well-diversified across multiple sectors, and therefore more resilient to market shocks than single-sector apps like Spotify. As we saw within the past year where the stock and valuations of various public and private startups and unicorns crashed 80%. 6. FAANG companies pioneered the modern web, including Amazon with e-commerce (Prime 2-day shipping) and cloud (AWS hosts some 70% of the internet). Cloud as an business model and entire tech sector came about because Amazon.com's infra was so massive that they decided to start selling it as a service. 7. Because FAANG companies are so massive and pioneered much of modern software engineering practices, they have a lot of internal tooling that they created decades before the public versions ever launched. Which is what this thread is about. So please shut the fuck up about "hurr durr Amazon not FAANG, only Amazon people refer to FAANG". Go pay Joe Rogan another 500m while making peanuts at Spotify.
Who the fuck is missing GPT to do their job by this much? It's useful for basic POJO stuff, and to do boilerplate work/doc stuff, but if you're that desperate for it I dread to wonder how you managed to get in this position. Besides, lots of people still use ChatGPT at work. Our senior engineers use it for docs to ensure that their English is correct. Some junior engineers use it for basic code changes too, but it usually results in awful Python and CR's that clearly haven't been tested or understood.
Absolutely correct.
True. Recently I tried to get some code snippet for some task and it gave me awful code. It can work better for very basic code and better at non coding items like framework related questions. if anyone feels like, it's working for difficult things then most probably they are not difficult but their skills are. For sure, It will improve in the future but not at that point now.
Use Amazon Q its much better and can read your code.
Amazon Q is not even the fart
we have a custom GPT partnership with Open AI and I use it every day ✌️
Move to a team that uses AWS.
In short what tools do you use and how effective are they.
I use ChatGPT and Copilot all the time.
Copilot is very difficult to use
I guess it depends on individual circumstances. I use Copilot on my corporate laptop. It is currently available in almost every app I use so, to me, the interactions with the service are seamless.
I don't agree at all. You've clearly never had sleepless nights because everyone who knew how to run a project quit the company and now it's your responsibility to build something despite the fact that the devops server was accidentally wiped out by IT.
Ok chad
When you were doing that, someone was railing your girl
Absolutely feeling the same. I mean, Google even has some kind of custom internal LLM, but it's quality sucks so hard it's not useable, especially for code. I miss ChatGPT. At work, I barely get anything done. At home, I go from initial idea to fully functional prototype in less than a weekend.
That last sentence is so effing true
Juniors these days... Back in my day we went from idea to functional prototype in a weekend because we were good
