I work in Facebook ads for about 40-50 hrs a week. Every time you finish the 1000 experiments to optimize ads and maximize some revenue/user metric, there’s a backlog of another 1000 experiments thrown at u. I was developing serious mental issues, as I’m a recent grad, living alone, no human contact, making $4800 a month after tax and feeling like I live paycheck to paycheck with my loans from college and my car loan, plus expenses. I’m a bad cook and my job gives no time for lunch breaks, meetings around the clock so I Uber eats $500 a month too. Since I hated my life so much that I literally wanted to murder ppl, I decided to start a startup. So I work between 9 am - 11 pm every day, even weekends. My job at FB usually ends at 6 pm and then I focus on my startup. Oftentimes I work on the startup simultaneously. I now have no time to think about mental problems, because I’m working 24/7. If I’m not working I’m sleeping. I barely eat but optimize showers for thinking about my days. I absolutely hate my life and the startup is to build something that gets me financial freedom so I can soon leave this miserable occupation.
Tc?
Think about 210k? Pre tax. Feels a lot less but haven’t gotten any stock grants yet
New grad, 210k and you feel less?? , looks like you got some expectations issues.
Do meal prep for food. It's super easy once you get in the flow. I make 8 meals on Sunday evening in around 2.5 hours. Having Uber eats all the time is super bad for you.
God I hate these “meal prep” people 🤦♂️
@6feet6inch, you sound grossly close minded lmao
“Oftentimes I work on the startup simultaneously.” Probably don’t say that. Mate take time off, otherwise working that much is gonna just turn into a crash and burn. Start getting massages, or getting excercise or something. It always sounds cliche but you need to find some balance. Chasing money is fine, but when you make all that money in a few years but you ran yourself mentally and emotionally raw, you can’t buy back those years. Take a step back, find some balance. Startup is okay but don’t make that your crutch.
I don’t want balance. I prefer dying quickly over this lifestyle. I don’t want to waste my 20s at Facebook. The thought of it makes me go insane. I want to go work on problems I give a shit about, but those require money
Unfortunately mate, I think you’ve set in your mind what you want your roadmap to look like and I.. nor anyone else will probably persuade you of that. Everyone wants to work on things they find meaningful, no one wants to waste their life away. But if your life is miserable and every minute is spent trying to escape it - you’re just delaying the inevitable . Most people don’t get to work at FAANG , but still work insane hours with no recognition and no great call to action. But they learn to stop fighting the current but instead move with it. Best of luck to you.
How much of that work is actually focused on a task and working? Curious because I’m trying to maximize my own work output as well. I work about 12 hours a day, but my actual timed focus work is 8 hours. I take breaks. Any idea about how much focused work you get in a day?
Startup work makes me feel alive. So very productive. I hate my work at FB because it’s literally just maximizing ad revenue ad infinitum.
That’s awesome. Just curious if you happen to know your clocked focus time?
You wanted to murder people? 🤔
Yes. Hated my job a lot and my life prospects. I don’t think I’m normal in the stimulus department
$4800 after tax / month? What’s ur base, OP? & located in CA, I assume?
You need to be dropped off in a remote forest somewhere and find a new sense of being
Perhaps.
This post is a cry for help.
So what's the startup. In guessing it's not an ad bid engine.

Hey man, if you can work until 6pm at Facebook, I'd just take it a bit easy. I think a lot of engineers work until 6pm. Sit back, take a deep breath and focus on yourself. At 6pm, take a shower, spend an hour or so learning about some very basic meals to cook and maybe go out for a walk. You can balance life with work! 😄
There is no roadmap or path for me at FB. I feel numb. I’ve decided to work 100+ hours a week and die an early death from overworking as being better than balancing and being a slave for 20 years until I retire with a washed up wife I met off tinder because I was too busy to meet girls irl and a couple Tesla’s
Ok bro u need to chill. I'm also a recent grad and my life is pretty chill at Amazon (contrary to what Blind thinks) Yeah I don't have a girl but I have some amazing close friends and that's all you need. Ignore things like tinder, TC, fancy cars, etc. For me, as long as I can eat well and blow a little cash on having fun I'm good. Don't need anything more. Work is work. It's a part of your life - not all of it.
