Is the culture at IBM as bad as I've heard? No one I've spoken to has a good word to say about it..
I worked for a company spun off by IBM. I don't have anything good to say about the culture. Bosses who stayed in their ivory tower and were suspicious of the grunts doing the work. Back stabbing in the ranks. I'm pretty sure my supposed mentor sold me down the river.
I work for one of the Global Solution Centers (not global business services) and it has its ups and downs. I started as an intern and my manager has been amazing in listening to my needs and opinions as a new hire. I also recently graduated and she fought to take me on as a supplemental employee so I get a raise until the hiring freeze lifts (which they'll then take me on as a regular employee). I also get to work on some interesting projects and I got to go to a huge conference in New York while I was still an intern, so that was cool. Pay is pretty great for a first job out of college in my area too! As far as the bad: the culture here can be kinda weird. I feel like an outcast sometimes, haven't really made any "work friends" and coworkers seem hesitant to have friendly chats or go to lunch. In my 5 months here I think I've gone to lunch with coworkers maybe 3 times. Wasn't invited out to bars with the rest of "the guys" when in New York, that kinda thing. It may honestly be me but I've never had problems making friends in previous jobs. I really wish there were more designers on our team as well, but due to the hiring freeze that's not likely to happen anytime soon. Right now it's just myself and the design director, and we both differ a bit on design methodology/philosophy. Sometimes that can be helpful but other times it can be pretty frustrating.
At IBM, everyone is a lone wolf. Gonna hunt for your own shit, there is only so much management can do
Sounds like msft to me
I worked for both. You are lucky.
Watson health is doing some exciting and interesting stuff. I like the quality of work and responsibilities I handle. The team is good too, sharp people with good ideas and right enthusiasm. But Ibm doesn't invest in the employees, no events no free food no nothing. And you look at companies the culture around you .. you think Ibm sucks.. forgot the falling revenues.. ibm can't afford it.. someone pls change the upper management
Ahahaha, Watson Health laid off a good portion of their senior devs. Also, there is very little direction, and much backtracking.
It was discussed in tech lounge so i ll just post my coworkers responses here
