IBM engineers are better than Meta engineers

Slowly realized literally the only thing Meta has is people who know how to work their hiring system. On average engineers at IBM were better at front end, modern practices and just did their job better. I fully get it now. Meta hires ex IBMers. IBM doesn't hire ex metamates.

Meta dfQc28 Jan 21

Meta is not about quality but about having a drive and being able to do a lot of work fast. That's a different skill.

Meta Justhelpin OP Jan 21

So you admit, metas half assed work is negatively affecting the world

Stock looks fine

IBM has people who are actually interested in being engineers not interview-faking TC chasers or visa slaves

Amazon notrealll Jan 21

This is not true. I spent a semester interning at IBM and I can tell you that so many people I worked with were only there because they couldn’t get a job at a better company. Several of my teammates would openly talk about how they were LCing to try to leave lol

IBM bbWI22 Jan 21

@notrealll I mean if you believe LC skills are what make you a good engineer. “Couldn’t get a job at a better company” usually implies an individual struggles with passing LC interviews. It’s true IBM’s bar is lower, but that doesn’t mean that all engineers are weak (we do have a lot of weak engineers though, but I feel that this is a result of lack of motivation due to low pay and frequently changing business direction)

IBM perma_bear Jan 21

I mean we did invite the ATM, debit/credit card, lasik, hard drive the list goes on

Snap 🐕Akita🐕 Jan 21

IBM didn’t invent lasik lmao. All IBM did was discover than UV excimer lasers can ablate tissue without damaging nearby tissue. Literally everything else to develop lasik was done by ophthalmologists and academic researchers.

IBM perma_bear Jan 21

Oh my bad I misread this “President Obama Awards IBM Scientists with National Medal of Technology and Innovation for Inventing the Underlying Technology in LASIK Surgery″, 1 Feb 2013”

Whatnot postmod46 Jan 21

IBM is really bad at ML, just see Watson

Meta Justhelpin OP Jan 21

Watsonx? Shooting it out of the park lately?

Amazon stevekerrr Jan 21

This is a joke right?

Google Cryptirbnb Jan 21

Emotional Damage 🥲

Meta dtrdtrm Jan 21

Who the F cares if IBM pays 1/10th of Meta salary to these better engineers,

Pure Storage nkotbsb Jan 22

My experience with IBM engineers tells me they are the Arby’s of tech.

IBM Skt SktSkt Jan 22

What?

I have many friends in IBM research and IBM Software Lab. Also 3-4 years back I was interviewed in IBM once. My perception- They are mostly focused in Patents and Papers. Now spending loooooong time to work in a single thing and publishing a paper in software space is not sign of a good engineer. Anyone with descent knowledge in related subjects can do that. I worked in AWS and was co-author of two papers. Amazon knew how to get things done fast. One of my IBM interviewers spent 20 years in IBM and had many patents, but he was asking theoretical questions about system design and was also unaware of consistent hashing. As a research institute IBM Research may be good. But IBM is not good for engineers. And IBM,in general, does not have good engineers who can deliver quality product in high-pace environment or turn a research into a product with a clear view of target consumer space.
