Need some help deciding :( Technical APM at Shopify TC: 95k - More interested in the company and industry - only a year contract with option to move to full time if they like me - get to choose what I work on - also more technical feel like I would learn more -hearing they’re doing layoffs so not sure about stability APM at IBM TC: 110k - currently here, work and industry does not really interest me, not great wlb - working on exciting things but not super technical, not feeling like I’m learning much - more stable work environment but culture wise not a good fit for me Is it worth staying at my current company for more Money? I’m still early in my career so open to taking a chance at Shopify but given the market is it worth the risk to leave? I think that moving forward with Shopify would give me the opportunity to pivot to more exciting things in line with what I wanna do in the future but also looking to hear from more experienced folks…Appreciate any advice #ibm #shopify #apm #
NEVER jump to lower TC, negotiate or keep looking.
I wouldn’t advice joining Shopify right now, culture has changed a lot in the last couple of months. Not worth taking a pay cut to join
Okay :( how has the culture changed? I was pretty excited for the APM program
Pretty much top down decisions, and leadership making unilateral decisions leaving everyone else in the dark, directors included.
Just a heads up that there are layoffs rumors swirling at Shopify as reported by: https://www.businessinsider.com/shopify-workers-brace-for-more-layoffs-ahead-of-q2-earnings-2023-4 Just something to keep in mind before submitting a resignation at your current job.
Thank you! I saw it’s definitely something to think about
Definitely not the same culture as it used to at Shopify.
Shopify is a dumpster fire right now. IBM sucks but it sucks in a predictable way. At Shopify you get to discover a new hell of disruption each month as they add arbitrary and inconsistent layers of bureaucracy.
I was set on taking it but all of these comments are scaring me 🥲
I think shopify name is better than ibm as a stepping stone but the fact that it’s a contract position makes it not worth it. I would not choose contract position over full time.
Don’t take a contract with Shopify. Never take a contract at Shopify. It’s too unsettled here right now
Please do not take Shopify. In the current climate, APMs at Shopify have very very minute chance of converting.
Shopify is leaning very hard into more experienced people. The bar for passing your contract position to get FTE will be extremely high. The Shopify opportunity will be challenging, but probably rewarding (assuming they don't kill the program, the market is very uncertain atm).
whats APM?
Working here for 3 years now. Don't come! Wait until all this layoffs phases pass. If you have an opportunity now, most likely you will have in the future. When you see a bunch of positions and Shopify hiring again, then it is time to come. Until there we are all in the dark here. Extremely positive people is now getting low rating, pressure raising and a constant bad leadership decisions, with everyone behind at the dark until last second.
But if I don’t take it will they like black list me? I’m afraid that this is the only shot I’ll get to work at Shopify, I’ve always been interested in the company
I don't think you will get blacklisted. Just explain that know is not a great moment, that you are focused on a important project and you don't want to leave the team now.
Timing is not great. Stay on if there are no pressing reasons. Also why switch at the same level with a salary decrease? That too on contract
I guess it would be more cause I’m interested in Shopify and the product
That’s not a strong enough reason to make so many compromises.
