https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/18/ibm-earnings-q2-2022.html "The company began selling the z16 mainframe computer during the quarter, leading Z systems sales to jump 69%, compared with a decline of 19% in the prior quarter."
What even is the even in "What even is a mainframe computer?"?
Hard to explain
They're one where the most banking transactions happen..
Z/Mainframe is a cyclical business because revenue is only ever generated when the new generation is forced unto the clients. Of course nobody is buying anymore when they know that a new generation is released in the next quarter. Curious how well they manage to sell the meagre improvements of the z16 over z15.
What type of customers are needing these mainframes?
Nobody needs it, specs-wise. They are vendor locked-in since the 60s because IBM guarantees ongoing support for ancient software (not needing to rewrite your whole ecosystem around a shitty COBOL thing with millions of lines of code is a huge incentive to stay) and some performance improvements for each generation. “They” being some of the largest banks in the world as well as insurance and government agencies. Anybody writing new software won’t go for a Mainframe. It’s 99% legacy as well as IBM-guaranteed certification.
We’ve been around for a 110 years. Most of you guys start up’s will be done by the end of the recession. I think we’ll be alright
Just stick with this and not Watson and I see a viable future IMO

Just reinvest that dividend and hodl, I swear IBM would run my elderly mom over with a tractor if it was the only way to pay stock holders dividends, just make sure you’re on the receiving end and sell the dip when you finally jump to whatever faang is left after recession is over
