IBM Watson has been in development since 2004, at its peak had 2,000 employees working on it, and IBM is now laying off 3,900 people.
OpenAI (ChatGPT's parent org) has only been in business since 2015, has ~500 employees total, and Microsoft is investing $10 billion into the tech.
