At Reddit I’ve seen some directors keeping around an engineer as a direct report. Is this generally seen as a good career move for the engineer?
What is IC?
Individual contributor (not a manager)
I generally see that for very high level IC's such as architect types roles.... Or that lone ic that sucks and no one wants...
Title and reporting structure is only loosely related. I’ve seen VP reporting to another VP. Directors reporting to another director.
Cuz there are too few titles and level for the inflated bureaucracy going on there
Sometimes... Pros: you have access to people others usually dont and you are very visible. Cons: you might be working in isolation or on non-challenging projects. If you screwup, its visible as well :)
Which org?
When you report directly to a Director they have more visibility into your work. This makes the decision of whether or not you deserve a promotion easier.
