In tech, how much does college brand name matter and why? The IITs teach the same engineering subjects as every other engineering college. Those graduates don't necessarily have greater subject knowledge. They probably are hired because they are perceived to be smarter and more productive, not because their knowledge of cs is better than their non IIT counterparts. Work experience, company, skill sets, soft skills matter too. All these can be honed even if one is from a non IIT background. Why do companies pay big bucks for the IIT'ians? Many like Sundar Pichai are not even cs grads - they did their BTech in metallurgical engineering. The subject knowledge relevance is 0. This argument extends even to these ivy league colleges in USA #iit #ivyleague #tech #sde #faang
Whatâs IIT?
Question is why other college students are paid less. Not why they are getting paid more.
Top companies don't discriminate based on college for people who clear the interview.
Not true. I've received a return offer for a top financial firm after an internship that was 60% of what candidates from better colleges were getting. And I can say with confidence that my work was at par with, if not better than the candidates I'm referring to.
Because they passed IIT exam, world's most toughest entrance exam with intense competition. Isn't that a strong signal already about the candidate ?
Clearing exams is not the same as adding value to a particular job. The jee exam is for physics, chemistry and maths. SDE, SDET, PM jobs are tech stack based, with deep cs knowledge. You are suggesting that jee exam performance is indicative of sde, SDET, pm role job performance, even though subject knowledge does not overlap.
Clearing JEE means they're able to do what they put their mind to. Unlike other core branches, in CS you'd hope to hire someone who can pick up something quickly and make a difference. I would hire someone who can pick up python in a month over someone who has 15 years experience in python.
Not as much as in India ... here you are a treated as an A class citizen ... The only IITs that matter and I can grt into are Islamia Institute of Technology Or Illionis institute of technology
Illinois Tech lmao the bar has never been any lower. Itâs almost like Udemy or Byjus
Getting into IIT or NIT shows sacrifices and tremendous hard working talent with dedication. Non IIT guys stands nowhere in comparison to them. IIT/NIT guys are way smarter and sincere.
One can work hard even at work. Ritesh Agarwal, Vijay Sharma, the Bansal's all these guys worked pretty hard after starting their professional careers. Work ought to be rewarded, not college degrees.
What about reservations @expedia ? đ It's not all sacrifices and tremendous hardwork đđ
You forgot to mention getting into in âgeneralâ category ....
Reservation is till getting the seat at IIT and in the professional world you are known only by your talent. I belong to SC and graduated from one of the old IIT's and currently in msft as Senior Software Engineer with 5 yoe and both in my previous company and current one, I was among top performers in my org. What i have seen that those belong to general category and couldn't clear IIT, start their randi rona everywhere and justify their failure due to reservation. Now you guys also have EWS reservation, so stop cramming about reservation. Reservation is their because it is needed for the upliftment of the backward society.
Ignore the haters!
Not once you have a couple of years of experience, it does open few doors though
It matters a lot more than people admit, even after years of experience. Having interviewed and worked with lots of them, the reality is that the top school grads are just smarter and more productive ON AVERAGE. But a few are remarkably ineffective and I've seen multiple cases where the unambiguously best engineer in the department/company graduated from a lower tier college than most or all of their coworkers. I've also seen two instances where some top school grad thinks they are smarter than everyone else but actually just have spent more years with and accumulated more knowledge about the unmaintainable system they built than anyone else. Relatedly, certain managers are flattered that some top school grad is working in their team/department/company and thus prone to unfairly rating them higher; the opposite can also happen, where the manager has a distaste for top school grads.
So IQ, ability to learn quickly, visualization are what IIT and IVY league grads get paid for. Not anything specific to subject knowledge or work ex?
That depends. I've seen cases where they are preferred for their subject knowledge in addition to the other factors you mentioned. Some managers from low tier colleges also are flattered that some top school grad is working for them and then are more likely to rate them a top performer. I've seen a couple cases of this where the person didn't deserve it. Will add to my edited post above
They are not just perceived to be smarter. They are smarter.
So they are paid more because of higher IQ?
Yes
