IMC vs Meta new grad

Got GE return offer at Meta and the offer is for Seattle (no tax), so it would be slightly more. With CoL we can just say they're the same pay though, it's within the margin of error for stock movement or performance bonuses. I'm not sure what year 2 pay looks like at IMC, and the bonus structure is opaque. It's hard for me to know if I'll be forced to leave at a very specific time or give up a performance bonus which could comprise half of my salary or more- would be interested in hearing from IMC employees on that one. With that being said, it seems like year 2 pay at IMC would probably be in line with year 1, making up for sign-on. I'm considering: 1. Transferrable skills/interesting work- I'm into data infrastructure, obviously Meta has good teams here but I think IMC does too? 2. Brand, what opportunities I'd have in a few years (perception of #1 may effect this too) 3. Opportunities for my wife (data scientist) in Chicago vs Seattle I think regardless I'd want to work on data infrastructure, but I'm worried about the IMC brand potentially not opening as many doors for me if I, for example, decided prop shops weren't for me and I wanted to go back to big tech in a few years. With that being said, I think I may have more opportunity for collaboration at IMC, and with a Meta internship and a prop shop, it may be that I'm able to get interviews with any tech company regardless at this point, and IMC would open more doors in HFT. I'd really be interested in hearing from hiring managers to point #2. What's your bias? No poll because I never thought votes were useful here- I'd be interested to hear what people have to say. #imc #meta

You are a new grad and already married?

interesting perspective, i'll take that into consideration when making my decision

Meta will open just as many doors as IMC will, if you want to interview at HFT’s. You will not have to go through a non-compete coming from Meta.

Aren't offers like way better if you start in quant though? Not sure if an ~$800k offer would come through for someone with 2 YOE at Meta, where it may for someone with 2 YOE at another firm, since they know they're likely competing with bigger numbers.

Chicago Trading Company 22SAS Sep 24, 2022

That's an incorrect assumption. Unless someone is coming from a place like HRT and JS, the numbers for a 2 YOE dev are not that much higher than FAANG. A 2 YOE dev does not have the level of expertise in the key technical areas that HFT's look for. To get that sort of number they'll have to get multiple offers from tier-1 places, to be in the position to negotiate a first year comp which will be this high relative to their YOE and expertise. A Meta candidate can get to the same number if they too have multiple offers from tier-1 firms. This happened to someone from a unicorn/decacorn, multiple tier-1 offers and then one of those firms just changed the whole game by offering a mega huge sign-on. So, it is definitely doable without going to an HFT. The HFT and Meta candidate will both need to be in this spot to get those numbers. The very rare case is if that 2 YOE HFT dev is on a desk that generates a lot of PnL and they're at 500k+ comp, and mind you that is base and year end bonus. This doesn't happen often and is pretty rare. The only time an HFT candidate has the upper hand is if they're interviewing for one of low latency C++ roles, FPGA dev, or a quant dev position, since in any of the three positions it helps having applied the technical knowledge in a trading related domain. For data infra, which is what I think you want to do, makes no difference.

Idk about IMC but if I were to choose between citadel and meta I would choose meta every time even if they paid 2x: The only hft with sustainable wlb is Jane Street.

Meta xgDS61 OP Sep 24, 2022

What makes you say that? I sort of had this idea beforehand but now it seems like plenty of HFTs have fine WLB, IMC included. People say they work 8-6 or 8-7 with no on-call, and I believe them. That's not great, but it's not hell. Edit: now being after talking with others who have worked in trading and tech

Chicago Trading Company 22SAS Sep 24, 2022

WLB for devs is pretty good at most HFT’s.

Offer breakdown?

Meta xgDS61 OP Sep 24, 2022

Meta is 129k+10% perf+213k/4 stock + 75k sign + 10k relo + 11k 401k match= $291k y1 since I imagine that's what you care about. IMC may want to protect their offer and they're small enough any recruiters who see this know exactly who I am. I imagine most year 2 meta salaries in Seattle do not hit 280k unless stock appreciates, yeah?

How tf is an intern making more than me after I promo? This some bullshit

Meta fksjco Sep 24, 2022

I’d work at IMC because Meta and big tech in general are boring AF.
